Traction Control D2 locking front near side at 40mph....hairy moment!

Hello all,

Owned my 2003 discovery td5 for just 3 weeks. Been trying to identify which corner is making the TC kick in as it's been very very intermittent

This morning however was a bit of a bugger, the TC kicked in around 40mph and a split second later locked the front near side up dragging the car into the side of the road. Luckily I had pretty much woken up but this little trick made sure I was paying attention!

It then just as quickly released and the bloody thing hasn't put a foot wrong for the rest of the day over 70 miles.

The rear bearings were replaced in June this year so am I safer just replacing the front two is my question.

That sounds more like your front wheel bearing collapsing, is there any noise while driving, does the wheel feel loose if you push and pull it at the top? I think you should be very careful.
 
Just checked for movement and all are solid with no play at all. So def bite the bullet and replace for safety's sake.

It was on a computer a couple of weeks ago when TC light came on but no faults were logged.

I'm guessing that my best option will be to replace the whole front bearings if there is no problems with the front pads as previous post suggested.

Can't risk the wife's wrath and general damnation if it happens again and she's driving!!!
 
Yer it will be your abs sensor,i had that problem on my d2 i had fitted a new one(allmakes) !!turned out it needed packing out as it was to close. binned it in the end and got a genuine one.
 
The TC/ABS light will go on when it detects the wheels going at differing speeds, so that might not necessarily indicate that it's a TC fault at the root of the problem. I'd be looking for something mechanical - wheel bearing, brakes binding, that sort of thing. If a roller is breaking up in the bearing you can get similar symptoms - it jams solid intermittently and then feels OK for a while then jams again.
 
Know one makes an Tc system that will lock a wheel up at speed
thats Fing dangerous and would never pass a safety development thingy
 
Well all the threads are correct, the Traction Control light issues are a total mind feck!....

It turned out that there was a very slight movement in a front bearing. I replaced that and it stopped the car locking up one brake at 40 mph.

However, the TC light still came on but nothing much happened.

So I replaced the rear bearings as well. It turned out the two rears replaced in June by previous owner were of highly questionable parentage...even though it cost them over £340!!

Bingo! Job done.

A mate got pulled in by vosa with his artic. They noticed his trailer had signs of work being done on one hub, so he proudly told them how the tc light had started flashing on intermittently, same sort if issue, so he prudently took it apart and sorted it a few days before.
They did him for not recording other work with his tacho records
