well lads,

got a friend whos a mechanic, had a look around the depender, and said the offside track rod end needed replacing, so i got the part and have decided to give it a go myself, is it as easy as it looks or is there something i could properly fook up and cause me to and up in a ditch :D

You'll need a t.rod end spliter co's more than likely will be tight on the arm ,thats to avoid the use of the big H***R . On replaceing the t.rod end mesure its length how far in it was so you replace the new one the same, that way your tracking won't be far out that's it . Tea time..

As above , but i like the big hammer way :) .
Use a good ring spanner over the taperd shaft to wind it out ( check if its left or right handed thread first ) , Lots of lube down the slit in the track rod as your winding it out . if it dont move get some heat on it from a paint stripper gun or better the gas type .

Fookin ba****d of a yoke literally wont come off.... got the the bold with the split pin off no bother, belted the rod end out of the hub assembly then tried twisting it out, no hope, tried shocking it with a hammer, heating it, wd40, the whole lot, no go... so tried to remove the whole track rod, so i could stick it in a vice and try again, removed the bolt with the split pin in it on the near side and the bolt holding the damper, belted it with a hammer to remove the nearside of the track rod... wont budge, tried heat and wd40 again, nothing... any suggestions??

Yup get it on a hard surface the flat bit of yur vice, and hammer around the area where the rod screws in all around the entire area.

If that dunt work heat it up and cool it in a bucket of water a few times.

Remember and measure, or count the threads or turns when you take it out.

to get mine out - i fitted track rod tube into vice, put 2 foot length of steel conduit over taper bolt and worked it back and forth, interspersed with heat and wd40. Try and run a saw blade down the split in the track rod tube as well.

You have loosened the clamps on the track rod haven't you? I don't think any of your advisers mentioned them.

yea ive that done too, sorry forgot to mention :) see the problem is i cant get the fooker off the the other side so i cant get it to the vice, might try the ball joint splitter if i can get one handy :) thaks lads.

I got the wedge shaped fork type never failed to get a balljoint off yet. did a trackrod on the 90 for it's MOT on Thursday. took balljoint out, slackened clamp on tube put a stilson on the trackrod end and gave it a jolt ,came off piece of ****. Don't know what all the fuss is about :p

On the other hand mate brought his disco trackrod to me workshop when I was in Hull and I had to open the slots with a cold chisel apply loads of heat and put a 3ft scaff tube over the handle of the stilson and swing on the fooker to get it loose.
