traces of oil

Hi,
Can anyone help the other day while changing my antifreeze on my mk1 300tdi i notice traces of oil around the inlet manifold where the iner cooler pipe joins,I removed the pipe a clean it out it was like a oil sludge

is this anything to worry about or is something about to let go

NORMAL! & it will get worse!!!

A big problem on all modern cars.

How many miles it done?

You can blame your EGR valve for that, mixture of sooty exhaust gases,engine breather into inlet manifold causes built up of crappy black sludge!!!!!
Just cleaned on mine inlet manifold,intercooler, all pipes and blocked of EGR with a plate that I made up.
Jobs a good un now, goes like a good un!!!

Hope that's of some help, do a search for EGR valve!

Had the pipe off the manifold on the 300tdi and the build up of sooty muck is awful, new gasket and a air system clean next time I get a minute.

It is a standard thing. I blocked the EGR off as well to stop the soot problem and improve running.
