Morning!

My mates (I'm in France & he's in U.K) p38 V8 Auto is poorly (See other post) and wants to get it home cos garage is trying to sting him 6k to fix it.

So the question is has the p38 got a transfer box that he could manualy put into neutral so that sombod could tow him home and is this advisable?

I know you should never tow automatics but with the transfer box in neutral no drive would be going to it,would it?

I know the best bet would be to take the props off but that aint gunna happen.

Thanks in advance!

Jason

he has 2 options really jason 1 remove both props or option 2 is put on a trailer or a transporter , failing that his engine wont be his only problem for sure .:(

Hi Jason-no problem.
Turn Ignition switch OFF
Insert 10A fuse into position 11 of the BECM fuse box under the drivers seat (This slot will be empty)
Switch Ignition ON until "Transfer Neutral" is displayed on message display.
Turn Ignition OFF
Turn key to position 1-Steering lock off and car can be towed.
Remember the steering will be heavy and the brakes harder to work if the engine is not running.
The above procedure is in the Owners Handbook under "Emergency Towing"
I am sure all the guys on the forum wish you well with the safe recovery and the best of Irish luck from me!!

well bugger me !! :) i never knew that :D :D :D

Forgot to add that I think that they will need Arnie or Rambo to steer it all the way from France if it's on a rope. I could work the pedals but me legs go funny after a few pints of the black stuff.

If you do tow it get a spec type ambulance these lift the front wheels off the floor and the towed vehicle in effect becomes a trailer. Or failing that an Aframe. Not strictly legal but it'll get you home faster and safer than a rope would.

hiya redhand , how come its not "strictly legal to tow it on an a frame the one i own is rated at 3.5 tonnes , and in the past have towed things like loaded transit pickups and the like with no problems whatsoever    .

the law says an unbraked trailer must weigh less than 750kg Gross. An aframe/dolly can be used but it should only be used in an emergency to recover a vehicle to a place of safety. Even the ones with braking systems don't qualify either because they don't operate the brakes on all the road wheels or they don't meet C&U regs. Try the National trailer associations website for the legalese bit.

The best place of safety is yer own garage!!

Aye I quite agree. Problems start when some stuck up copper or (god forbid) an highways agency patrol decide to get shirty und offacious.

Ahve used one meself. just thought he oughtta know in case he gets a pull and blurts out that he's jus come all the way frum froggy land.
