Towing Electrics

I've sold my 110 and replaced it with a 04 90XS which doesn't have a towbar fitted. I want to fit one which I hope will just bolt on. I can't see a plug for the electrics though. Will it have one fitted at the factory and if so, where is it

It's too big to go through the holes in the tub? So I'm guessing in the wheel arch by the indicator

You should find connector on offside behind lights. Stick your hand behind sheet plastic in wheel arch

If you unscrew the rear lamp cover plate inside the rear tub (drivers side) you should find loads of spare bullet connectors

A little time with a multimeter will quickly identify the relevant circuits for indicators, stop lamps etc

Not on a TD5 or Puma.

There aren't any bullet connectors in the rear wiring, everything is connected using sealed connectors.

As jimwyllie has said, there's a dedicated 9-way towing electrics connector (Grey) under the O/S rear wheelarch, behind the mud screen, which the 12N (or 13-pin Euro) towing electrics plug in to -

maybe on a new vehicle, just think how dirty and rotten that plug will be on something 10+ years old

The connector is fitted with a rubber sealing cap at the factory, but I have come accross them, where water has crept into them and coroded the terminals.

The 9-way sealed connector was used from the start of TD5 production (1999 Model Year).

Earlier Defenders and pre-Defender (like mine) have the Lucas 3/16" (4.7mm) bullet connectors behind the O/S rear lamp cover.

You can get the Lucas bullets and the 'snap connectors' (the 2-way, 4-way, and 6-way junctions) from most sources, including eBay.

Most sellers only sell the Brass bullets, which are available in two types -

solder -

and crimp -

But, the Brass crimp type require a special type of crimper, which isn't cheap.

Hex crimp -

and Hex crimper -

There's also a slightly cheaper crimper, that crimps 2 x 'flats' onto the bullet, rather than a Hexagon -

VWP also sell a 4.7mm bullet that is crimped using a standard crimping tool for non-insulated terminals -

This is similar to the bullets used by Land Rover, and is much easier to crimp.

Paul these are the crimpers that I have, by the looks of it they're not suitable.

Ideally I would like to replace many of the aftermarket farmer modification with new clean connectors and the correct wire combinations. Can you recommend where I can purchase new sealed plug type connectors and uninsulated connectors.

Although, my personal preference would be for Polevolt, as they have a wide selection of stuff, and their prices are very good.

I would recommend using Econoseal connectors to replace bullet connectors.

You will already have a number of Econoseal connectors on your Defender - on the lights, the main harness to chassis harness connections, etc...

Polevolt sell the range of Econoseal 070 connectors, from 2-way though to 13-way, in both male and female -

Your crimpers are OK for unsealed, uninsulated terminals, but for sealed connectors, you will need a different type of crimper.

This one from Polevolt crimps the conductor and seal in one operation -
