Ok... the oil cap test has been done, nothing moves... cambelt gone then.

We'll be towing it for about 20miles, all through B roads to take it nice and steady.
All four wheels will be on the ground.

Should the vehicle being towed be put in neutral on transfer box?

and on my disco, will it be better to go on highs or lows?

cheers for all the help so far!

Oo yeh, we've had some experiences on towing, luckly we are in contact via radios, so we can say when starting to brake, going too fast, too slow, etc..

When i were a bit younger, we had to tow my cousins disco 200tdi about 20 miles as the gearbox had focked itselfs. Really really enjoyed that day... Kind of sad ain't it? haha

I'd go for neutral in the t-box

A good trick is to take all the pushrods out.

You can then use the clutch every so often, put it in a high gear, let the clutch up again to turn the engine over in gear (like tow-starting) and that will put vacuum in the servo ready for the next stop.

This won't happen if the transfer box is in NEUTRAL!.

When the cambelt went on my 200TDi you couldn't get the push rods out without taking the head, they were bannaned that bad.

good idea charlesY if they will come out :D

just to add to everything else that you have all put.. the aa fella that came got me when I blew the HG had his puter tell him how to recover me.. and it said sommat like 10mph for 10 miles max in emergencies only and with both boxes in neutral.. other than that flatbed

Ho yeh.. forgot about this!

all went fine, with the tow bar was really easy to tow, except for my mate that was sat right behind me and couldnt see the road, so every tight bend had to be taken slowly so he could turn in and follow me..

we took it easy through the B roads and did the 20 miles with no problems at all, reaching safe and in 1 piece to the garage...

Is that IT????

We went through all that agony for THAT?

No Bangs Prangs or Katangas at all?

Are you SURE it's a LandRover?

CharlesY

Nop.. nothing at all..

the most exciting bit of the journey was when I got to a junction with a A road we had to cross and couldnt see both ways, so I said on the radio to my mate:
Can't see sh*t
he says - Do you want Adam to get out and help? (there was 2 in the disco being towed)
me - No.... I'll be alright...
me - wait.. can't hear any cars, I'm going for it!

of course during all this I didnt look on my mirrors and when Im half way through the junction i looked on my mirror and I can see Adam jumping around holding to the disco door trying to get back in.... as he was getting out to come and help..

lol

so...that was the most exciting part of the trip..

You got that welder yet??

You could weld the door shut with him in it... Remember.. As the driver you are infallible, it was his fault for not being in the car

; )

yeh mate, did you check my pics on facebook?
Got the MIG yesterday, but wasnt even expecting winning it.. I put a bid when the auction started and then got an email saying I won it!

My mate is getting a proper 500quid welder to do his landrovers and general work and then help me and other mate with our big welding jobs...
meanwhile with the MIG I bought I can do small jobs and practice my welding.. :)

WAY TO GO!!!

It's what Landy Owners do, PRACTICE, and FIND OUT HOW .... and it's what separates us all from ordinary sensible car-owners who pay stealers to fix their horrible tin boxes.

I will continue to do it the hard way till I drop. Then you lot can have my tools, tons and tons of them!
