Just thinking about this. Would it be better to have two 1m strops connected to the strap ?? I’m wondering if the strop is designed to cope with lateral pull in its centre. It would probably be fine, but I’m just thinking out loud.
I'd attach a pair of Brothers using the central ring to attach the strop/winch connection.
That way nothing can slip along in a lateral direction.
Or as you say, two strops joined in the middle with a shackle, to which the winch would be attached.
 
I have towed on tarmac with the "tie down" with no issues.
People mistake towing effort, and Recovery effort.

Agree 2 would be better for sure. Also the longer they are the less the angle and the less reduction of working limit ;).

+1 on that. Recovery is a long way away from what a tie-down point can take. Even a tow ball can become detached and fly hard and a long way.
Don't risk anything like that.

jate rings are also not a recovery point, they are just the military tie down point as @miktdish has stated.

However I do agree with belwo, they are more capable of an on road recovery or tow.

They are not recovery points but work just fine on the road, takes very little effort to tow on the road.
However, I have jate rings and a military bumper.

I reckon if you use the two points then most recovery would be fine.
By the sounds of it the OP doesn't intend on getting stuck in a ditch, then I don't either.

Pretty sure they are for recovery too, there are provisions on non military vehicles like a Discovery 1. Which would never need to be tied down in the same manner. They are also a part available from your local LR dealer. Military only components would likely not have been available to the general public.

Yes, you’re absolutely right, two strops would be better than one, although the load on one would be well within capability. Two would also be better because you have a failsafe should one strop/ring etc fail.
