Let me start at the beginning..... always wanted a land rover but could not justify
the price of a 110 so went ahead and brought a disco 300 tdi.
So far in 3 weeks broke down 3 times ( Fuel cut off wire, easy fix)
Radiator blown (new on fitted £100 ish and then theromstat, brass bleed valves)
Wheel bearing , glove box catch just fell off ( glued on? ),
STILL have to address the engine doing about 3 rotations before moving off( manual gearbox ) and now have a poke around the boot floor and completey f****d not just the floor panel but around 2" around that, deep breathe and get on with it , no gas in the mig:mad:, no worries off for a couple of others, £7 for spot weld removel bit:mad: and off we go,10 mins in i'll take the seat belts out, oh joy of joys Torx 1/2 turn and F****D, the worst fixing in the b****y world, so here i am with beer in hand rubbing my eye where the grinder caught me, B*****D, B*****D, B*****D
 
get used to it mate, you'll be spending a lot of time working on it,
hopefully fitting bits on that you want and not things that break

The first day i had mine the coil went then somthing todo with the alarm went. plus lots of oil leaks.

But when it's fixed and you go out and it works the feeling you have is gr8 you forget about all the hard work time and money been spent!
 
peaks and troughs.Hate mine when its ****ed and love it when it works.Sadly it spends more time being broke!
 
It's part and parcel of used car ownership no matter what you have. At least when the work has been put right you will have a good one. Better the devil you know I say. Buying a good one is pure luck, even good ones can hide things.

At the end of the day it's just nuts and bolts and anything can be fixed.
 
same here as goonarmy...

at least count yourself lucky that you can do the repairs yourself, like welding, etc...
less money to spend.

I'm lucky that i can do it as well, but imagine someone that has to take it to a garage to be repaired???
 
the amount of times Ive wanted to throw mine in the bin when its broke, but when its fixed its the best car in the world....would nt ever get rid of it. id rather fix it & be skint for a while as it sits on my drive waiting for the fuel fund to increase rather than sell it!

Thats life with a disco , i too have had cylinder head go twice ,probably because the first time not done properly ,power steering pump , radiator ,and now heater matrix ,its going to be a cold winter for me ,replaced the matrix radiator but can't get the damm pipes back in.

I've had mine about 5 years...in that time I've replaced the boot floor, welded up the rear wheel arches, the sills and the front inner wings, replaced the radiator, water pump, alternator, engine oil cooler pipes, power steering pump, fuel lift pump, brake pads, front discs and front wheel bearings, all 4 shock absorbers, repaired leaks in both diff pans, been delivered home by the RAC three times (alternator packed up + turbo hose split, heater pipe split, serpentine belt tensioner mounting stud sheared off), done all the normal servicing things and probably more that I have forgotten. I threaten to get rid off it frequently but then decide I like it and who's to say the next wont be a heap of crap.

seems like all family outings are now going to cancelled for the near future!!!
having a better day today and got a few off the patches sorted
 
i replaced the boot floor in a discovery im repairing and the lip the boot floor fits into was rotten so i went to a local metal fabricator with a press and had some 'lips' fabricated. i cut out all the rot right back to good metal then welded the parts in then dropped the boot floor in. i was extreamly please with the results :)

If i didnt work on it myself i couldnt afford to keep it or justify the garage bills, a disco is not like a "normal car" that you you can buy, drive, sell without any hassle, out of all my motors its the 1 which has def needed the most attention with its failings all others have been near damn well perfect.

Which has been bloody boring! the landy is by far my favourite and fun vehicle, i always feel ive acheived something when i get somewhere far away, it sounds stupid i know but ive never felt such emotion from a bloody car! mainly i hate it when its broke and love it when it works! drove a few german cars before, bloody good motors but completely devoid of personality -probably like the people who make em.

someone summed up a disco well in a previous post i read - "a disco isnt just a car its a weekend job" and i would wholeheartedly agree!

I wouldnt get rid of it through choice and if i did get rid i would go out and buy another 1straight away. i cant see me going back to a "normal car" ever as there are so many advantages to having a disco, the bull**** that comes with it is just part and parcel of it.

sum up do you need the hassle? is it worth it to you? drive it for a month and i bet the answer is YES:).
 
ok a quick update, things are getting sorted welding almost finished (would of completed but the wifes alfa refused to pass the mot) and things are going well, although still have beer in hand:5bcheers2: a quick question need to replace the front discs, driven the beast for about an hour and still 1/3 of the nearside disc has rust still on, new to land rover and read haynes, now on kerbside motors can you remove the whole hub and replace the disc?? rather than stripping the lot (new pads aswell off course)
 
Blimey guys, I am beginning to feel guilty. I have had a 300tdi auto for a 12 month now and the only thing I have replaced is the aircon pump, due to the wires being broken off. I tow a very large and heavy caravan with it, and it's been magnificent. So much so I have bought a TD5 auto. I have to say I was aware that the boot floor was vulnerable and before viewing the 300 asked the question, 'was it OK' and it is totally original and sound. Its a 98 and has 120K on the clock, and I would take it anywhere, even overland to Australia, just brilliant. If I had to spend weekends horizontal underneath it, I think that would end my love affair with it. Fingers crossed that the TD5 can live up to its older brother, although with such a large caravan I do not have many options.
