Tools for the Job

Hi All,

part of the reason i got my Series 3 was to have a bash at a bit of DIY mechanic-ing, as i haven't done any since my first car (chevette on a budget).

I'm well aware that the series need lots of tlc to keep 'em in fine fettle, and i can't keep relying on friends etc, so its time to roll up the sleeves and start walking the walk. The trouble is that my toolshed has all the stuff needed for basic round-the-house picture hanging and the like, but nothing for the landrover.

Where do i start? Wot tools do i need as essentials and wot would be nice-to-haves? metric or imperial? Anything else?

metric on a series he har he har

good set of imperial spaniels and sockets, some hammers, screw drivers, wd40 (family size) and some insulting tape.. yer gonna need something to fill yer diffs and g/boxes like a big syringe or a garden sprayer wiff the Daft mod.oh and a grinder for removing nuts and bolts that have bin on since roman times..

that should be enough to keep yer going.

and a swear box

and a cordless impact driver is very handy

Bizzarly i have a grinder (a typical Lidl bargain - just had to have it) but none of the other stuff.

I'm assuming in the assortment of hammers i'll need an especially a big heavy one for frustration and general beat the bejesus out of it type activities?

A trip to Argos is on the cards unless anyone can recommend a better alternative.

I think I'm gonna need a hammer the likes of which the world has not yet seen!

I have, in the space of a few hours, gone from a delirious high after learning the clutch judder was being caused by the brakes binding an was not a massive job, to a depths of despair kinda moment.

Was planning a trip out this weekend to get assorted tools and large quantity of hammers of various sizes, but now am thinking of taking my gorgeous series 3 to the lake and tying a large rock to it and lobbing it in - could be the kindest thing - for me.

My mechanic friend has just finished telling me, in great detail, and with a fair bit of delight, that my engine is F*cked as is my clutch. He reckons that it is now producing blue AND white smoke - meaning injector and pump overhall (reckons €500 min) and actually needs a complete engine rebuild as its bleeding all over the garage floor (his at the moment) and reckons that its gonna cost at least (€2000) to put right. And thats just the engine - suspension etc needs looking at - can live with knackered springs for now.

Now i know Landys leak,and its to be expected, but this is a bit like an artery has been slashed. It starts, runs etc but there is a ball of smoke following.

He is suggesting an engine rebuild - problem is i can't afford this, specially after just getting the bloody thing, and i have no idea about this stuff myself - had intended to start small and work up - didn't want to be buying all m'tools in one go and then lay into an engine rebuild.

Anyone got any ideas? Buy a recon engine? Secondhand from a scrap yard? Pay for a rebuild or wot?

To be honest i was expecting stuff like this when i bought it, but had hoped to do more than just drive it home before i had to seriously roll up the sleeves.

Somebody tell me this is what all landrover series owners go through, and slip me some inspirational advice and encouragement so that i can sleep a little easier tonight.

I think your mate just fancies the motor for himself and winding you up, and you can get your tools the same way we all do...........nick them off mates.

He's quoting you silly prices for silly jobs. Even if it was a worst case scenario & yer injun is farked you could still pick up a good doosul lump & stick it in fer a fraction of that.

Do not spend that kind of money with yer 'mate'!

U can pick up a good running 2.25 diesel for £200 at the most! and its easy to swop! Dont give up on it yet!

I know exactly how you feel! I only got a couple of months out of my first S3 before it broke! currently figuring out how to stick my engine back together! found the haynes manual and landy zone are a live saver when trying to figure things out!

ended up buyin a second S3 to get me about but that was a bit of a error as i'v spent as much time just keepin that bastard running! still, it keeps me out of trouble

Get the Halfords Professional range of tools.
If you break them, they replace them for nothing.Well worth paying out slightly more money for them.
I have had a deep socket set and screwdrivers from them for 15 years and broken several sockets and the small screwdrivers several times.
