A landy head is about three times heavier than a fiat 500 head so be prepared. There is an oil pipe at the back of the head that you need to remove, it's easy to overlook it. If you need to get the head off, have a think about having it converted to run on unleaded if it isn't already and has already mentioned lap the valve seats .

As I said elsewhere on this thread my son is assistant spanner and hammer wielder, I told him that everything is bigger, heavier and needs hitting harder when fettling LR's

Thank you to all contributors offering advice fr my problem, no not a problem, I got it as an ongoing project, which as an experienced Land Rover user if not owner, Land Rovers are always work in progress.
I'm going to take the radiator out and give it a good blast through top and bottom, force water through the galleys in both directions, and put as many of the bits back together that I can find, and see what happens. I hope that will be enough but if not, lifting the head will keep me off the streets for another day, which is no bad thing some would say...
I'll keep you posted.

Took the head off my Perkins a while back, about 2x heavier than a Land Rover one, Frist time I stood on the wings with a rope over my shoulders, - hard work. 2nd time I put a block on one wing, a 6ft piece of 4x2 across the top and used an old fan belt cut and clamped over the beam onto the head. Lifted one end and walked it round and onto another block ready to carry tot he shed. Used plastic laminate flooring wedges to ease the head up before lifting.

I’d get a new radiator mate.New hoses n jub clips too. The radiator drain plug is underneath on the right side. The engine drain tap is on the right side underneath the manifold. If you’re going to go as far as taking the head off and you can afford it get the head refurbished. It’ll transform the engine.

Thanks all, I'm getting new radiator, water pump etc and I need a new battery too. Thinking of this:

I know from experience, that this will work, but it's been a while so I crave your tolerance, is this suitable as a replacement for the current battery which is 88ah?

And while I'm here, I'm thinking of getting my bits from Paddock Spares: http://www.paddockspares.com/
Anyone any experience, good or bad from them?

Thanks

Always buy the biggest capacity that will fit would be my advice. Paddocks? I always use Paddocks and have had no issues with them, some have but not me. I also use lrdirect.com but you will need a parts catalogue as they go by part numbers.

The only issue I had with Paddocks is they pass off Britpart crap for decent parts. Even to the point of using other manufacturers photos as 'Stock photos' as they put it, to peddle rubbish. It happened too many times in the end for me so I no longer shop there. I hear placing your order over the phone holds less risk as you can at least ask them what make the part is but having bad experiences with Britpart I avoid as best I can.
The sales team are very good however and I always got lots of sympathy and understanding from them with replacements posted out without delay. Just a ruddy pain when your motor is in bits all over the drive and another broken bit arrives for the second or third time.
You will find a lot of stuff is posted direct from the manufacturer and paddocks simply act as the money taker so they never see what your getting.
I usually try and get Bearmarch parts whenever possible as they seem consistently hit the nail on the head between quality and price.

I see you mentioned Radiator.

I got mine from Paddocks. Yes the photo on their website even had a Bearmarch watermark across it.

It came direct from Britpart a couple of days later.

It was leaking at the bottom pipe stub.

They sent me another (exchange on collection)

The bottom stub was squashed flat on that one.

Four radiators later and a couple of weeks off the road I had to ask for my money back so I could go elsewhere and get one that was fit for purpose.

I think that was the last time I used them :(
