Blimey that was quick ! I dont normally get involved in chassis repairs,but this is for a very good customer of 20 odd years.You could be forgiven for assuming they would nearly fit seeing as they are jig built etc and specific fit - not a chance.How can they get away with such ****e ?
Trouble is there is not much choice,and it needed the extension bits cos the rear was rotted.Out with the Plasma cutter in the morning......
 
There must be a market for a decent quality x member that fits and does the job properly regarding strength etc.
I watched the slightly cheesy but strangely addictive TV series "a 4x4 is born" and he pretty much decided to make his own having seen what was available off the shelf.
I know he was building a 100 inch hybrid but it says a lot when he chose not to modify a standard replacement one but to build one completely from scratch.
 
Totally,its just very frustrating,it has to be commercial - building one from scratch is fine,but it would just take too much time.You have to bear in mind the overall value of the vehicle etc,plus how long the owner wants to keep it.
It pi--es me off tho,LR's are meant to be field fixable meccano sets,its getting to the stage where they are as throw away as any ordinary car.
 
I'd just like to say what a pile of crap Britpart/****part Def 110 rear crossmembers are,thank you.:mad:
well just put two ****part bulk head outriggers on me 90 pass side fit a treat no complaints drivers side what a pile of sh@t had to cut the end of alter the angle for door post fixing point then weld it back together total crap
 
I had a ****part x member from paddock a couple of years ago. Couldn't make it fit to save me life, absolute rubbish. Sent it back got a refund eventually. Paddocks are not very good at customer service when things go wrong. Got a bearmach one eventually which fit perfectly but I wasn't happy with the strength of it. In the end thought **** it and bought a new chassis.
 
I think its a con to get you to go for a full chassis!

I fitted a rear X member to my 88" in the 1980s and it was proper guirder material. Bl**dy heavy too!
 
Well its on,welded and painted.But its not a good job,really poorly made with internal stiffeners missing,the rear body mount holes were out of line...
There must be enough of a market for someone to start making decent ones.
 
How much do they take for a ****part x-member? Friend has full CAD drawings of LR chassis and a CNC plasma cutter, I will certainly look into what it would cost to make them up.
 
Thanks Disco,but even with decent quality parts its not a job I'd do again - it just takes too long to do it nicely,and then you end up working for nothing.Very annoying when you have the ramp blocked with it and other decent jobs waiting around......
 
If I ever need a crossmember again I'll definitely make one. It doesn't have to look exactly like the standard one remember, so long as it does the job and everything bolts on to it where it should.
 
another perfect example of how **** ****part are!! today went to replace my master cylinder for the clutch (didnt realise it was ****part wen i orderd it) was worse than the slighty nackerd genuine one i already had. couldnt get any pressure at all u could see the air bubbling up in the reservoir. went and got a genuine one, straight in and bled thru in no time. How is it possible to make such crappy parts?!?
