Yeah that would be a good way to do it Rob. Will grab some snaps when I next get chance, on to nights for a couple of days now. I will put the cam belt changers marks in line, then move it to the proper 'safe' marks. I called that local landy shop and he said he does stock a cam position sensor, but he doesn't remember ever selling one. Suggests either he is really expensive (£50+vat) or they rarely fail.. but I guess if it is failing the injection timing could be off. Though I'd have thought it would be throwing the EML constantly..

240 miles in and I have about 1/8th tank left.

Cheers for the offer Rob, will give you a shout if we are down that way! We are due a visit but aren't managing getting time, house renovation and the landy sapping time!
 
I don't think they fail that often to be honest... Can you get a live data from the cam sensor to get an idea as to whether it is working correctly or not?
 
Well the OBD2 didn't give me the real time data annoyingly!

Pretty much exactly 300miles on £75 at about 129p (can't find the receipt now!) I get that at about 60litres, about 13.4 gallons, which is about 22mpg.
 
You should be getting closer to 30 MPG. Another thought is the cat being blocked. This does happen, if the vehicle has been running incorrectly for a while.
 
Umm yeah, interesting thought. Would that be a case of a replacement? Or will it eventually burn off and come good? Is there a way to diagnose?

If the cat is blocked, it'll stay blocked. You can look at its condition by splitting the exhaust system are the cat. It'll be obvious if the substrate is partially blocked.
 
Ok, being a facelift, will mine have the cat in the manifold?

Also, is it clearable or is it time for new?

In live data, the post-cat Lambda signal will give some clues. If the cat is failing, the lambda signal will oscillate with greater amplitude, and possibly at a lower mean value too. Here's a telemetry for my old good catalyst (the one some cretin cut off my car!!!):

Don't think my little app will look at that live data either! Making me wonder if these fuel trim and cam position sensor faults are just spurious...?

It has had a bit of one.. will try thrashing it a bit more tomorrow and get it nice and hot.
 
Well the Italian tune up has had some effect.. it maybe a placebo, but it does seem 'peppy-er'... And the almost stalling initial idle is back...

Will drive normally for the day tomorrow and see if it settles again.
 
I can't remember if you said so earlier but have you tried replacing the plugs and coil packs/leads?
And if so did you use OEM or aftermarket?

I am also not noticing the fuel smell anywhere near as much... Wondering if I have just got used to it or if it has self.fixed!

Since the warmer weather, I have had the passenger window down (still haven't got a switch module for the driver's side), and I can now notice quite a loud tapping from the engine. Changes with engine speed, and seems to be once per rotation. Any usual suspects there? Sounds like it could be a tappet or something to me.

I had a 2004 K series a few years ago and replacing the coil packs and leads made a big difference even though they looked fine. I think I was able to get good quality OEM spares very cheaply at the time but don't remember where from.

Is the smell of fuel in the cabin when you open the door or is it from outside. If in the cabin it might be worth checking the fuel pump is properly screwed in. It may have been replaced in the past and not tightened properly.
K series have a bit of a tappety sound but good quality 20w40 oil can help
 
Cool, will look into the ignition stuff then, see what I can find.

The smell mainly came through the blower, drawn from the engine bay, which smelt quite strongly. I have searched and searched and can't find any leaks.

Ahh, I replaced the watery oil with 10w40 I think. Might stick some flush in and give it another filter and oil. Only cheap on these things!
