To buy or not to buy - is the chassis overpainted ?

summer vacation .
changing some tires.
Unfortunately there are so many lemonades in the market

No, German who recently settled to London =)

So, it's a holiday not a 'vacation', that's American.
It's tyres not 'tires', that's American too.
"So many lemons" - well that would be American as well.

Lemons because they leave a sour taste in the mouth, lemonades was a clue I missed that you are not a real Americam, just from an American region.

Here you go ...

Ha - wasnt aware of that. Didnt realize I am using so much "simple" English in my day to day conversation.

Thanks for the link...unfortunately a 90 would be too small as we want to put at a Rooftop conversion on top of that.

Found a TD5 below - what is your take on the chassis here?
Want to develop an understanding of what is good chassis.
In the first picture you can see the outrigger is completely fukced. The outrigger is like a cheese grater!

Personally, and, this is only my opinion, I'd only be looking for a galved chassis one. Either that, or basically budget to replace after a few years. I personally think td5 original chassis metal quality is/was pìss poor, same on the tdci's. Mine was 14 years old when i had to replace it, rear xmember was rubbish, both tubular outriggers were like colanders, both spring hangers where they attached to the main rail were only just hanging on... and you see some series vehicles with a few patches on the front dumb irons and maybe the odd outrigger replaced (not all series vehickes obvs) and some of them are 60/70 years old, think they had better on the 200 and 300 tdi's, probably because we were importing more Chinese shìte steel at the time of the td5 and tdci

I'm torn. It's either riddled or that's black paint where mud has fallen off. Surely the 2nd pic is paint?

Yeah I see what you mean, I just re-looked and zoomed in and I think you are right as the 2nd pic looks similar and is paint....bleedin defenders!! 🤣

Oh just to add, I fitted my galv one 10 years ago, and last year took the rear mudflap brackets off, where they sandwich onto the rear cross member you could see the galv had started to fail! Bearing in mind I wash mine rigoursly every Friday (pretty much) after work. And I have sprayed all the exposed steel bits with lanoguard, I was surprised!

In hindsight I'd paint a new galv one next time, at the time I liked the agricultural look of the galv, but for added protection I reckon paint on a new galv one, and then spray inside with lanoguard or similar.

Remember, the chassis is relatively easy to patch on any defender, make sure you check the bulkhead for corrosion to because replacement is a pain, and so are some repairs.

Hi,

Found another low mileage 60k 300 TDi 1998 110.
I am surprised by the mileage but car makes a good impression - no painting, chassis seems ok.
Not sure about the bulkhead though.
Was former used to transport police dogs

The chassis looks good and honest, the top side looks like it has been detailed to within an inch of its life, no TDI engine bay is that clean from use!

Why/what are you concerns with the bulkhead?
Does it come with a huge file of paperwork and service history?

Overall first impression is that is a reasonable vehicle but also I expect it is going to be overpriced. It is a 110 hardtop, one of the cheapest body variants, but because it is shiny, has a winch, and low mileage I would guess asking price to be expensive!

TBH it looks pretty honest and good. Its worth a look that's for sure.
I thought I saw a few crusty edges on the rear crossmember (cba to check and pause vid)
As ^^ the top looks "pretty";).
I am sure it has a price (that would make most of our eyes water:oops:).
Have you checked the MOT history on the DVLA site? I wouldnt expect to find much TBH.

Why only a rear winch?

J

60k miles for an almost 30y old car looks surprisingly low ? I am bit surprised…
Other concern I found in the MoT…
- 2023 concerns around the chassis or front cab ? See below
- 2024 no concerns suddenly

Its a private person.
He said that he had to replays dum irons on the passenger seat side.

Can anyone recommend a good mechanic or LL specialist around Southampton to inspect the car ?
