Any reason why you don't see or hear of people fitting new top hat liners, purely cost?
ther ehave been a few on here and a couple recently....

yes it isn't cheep, more than the car will be worth, but for some the P38 is worth the expense as they are great vehicles and if you are in for the long haul with it, the work makes sense!....scary money though...a top hatted block is circa £1750 then there is the fitting!

Any particular area people look for ranges... Part from here and eBay.

I'm located in South Yorkshire and doesn't seem to be a great lot local

Not a good time of year to be looking as there is always a winter price premium.
A chipped diesel will perform just as well as a V8 and cause you a good deal less stress, even the non chipped diesel goes well enough once you get used to the throttle action.
Go for a post 2000 diesel as there were quite few improvements.
I've had mine 4.5 years and it's never let me down but always needs something fixing. Overall it's been very cheap to run. Remember that you can also run the diesel on biodiesel or a veg oil mix making it potentially much cheaper than LPG and of course you don't lose the spare wheel.
Budget to replace the airsprings if they are original, they have a design life of 7/8 years and are easy to change, not expensive either. The EAS is reliable if well maintained.
Don't buy one on coils. Do budget to but a Nanocom for diagnostics.

Buy a diesel get it chipped and fit an EGR valve blanking kit to give it a bit more oomph and check to see if its got the type 3 RF receiver if not then get one as it will help prevent immobiliser problems.

What one gives it the oomph the chip or the egr ???

Dont waste cash on an EGR blanking kit, removing the vacuum actuator pipe does the same thing at zero cost.:D
