Just thought I would answer the merry go round of Freelander recurring questions in one fell swoop, and perhaps save a few folk the pain of owning one.
1.8 head gasket problem = built in design fault. No cheap solution once it's cooked. Torch it and claim the insurance.
Td4 power loss = turbo ****ed, loose pipe, or ****ed EGR/MAF. No solution. Torch it and claim the insurance.
V6 down on power? You would have thought that it would have more poke, but it doesn't and never will. Head gasket popped - yep, a known issue on the KV6 since they designed the leak in. Hope for the marriage of a petrol leak and a hot exhaust.
Air con rubbish = design flaw. You could waste £80 on a regas, but really there is no solution. Torch it and claim the insurance.
HDC not working = they all do that, you never take it off road anyway. Design flaw. No solution. Tin of lighter fuel might get a blaze started, start phoning Norwich Union to make you happy.
Rear window got a mind of its own? Guess what? Grab the petrol and matches.
Soft top won't fit - durr, they shrink. Cling film will plug the gaps. Unfortunately flames don't catch easily on a the saturated oily tarp of an excuse for a hood.
Removable Hardtop won't go through a carwash? As standard mate. Getcha bucket and sponge out.
Exhaust off its mountings? What do you expect when LR put the back box there?
Tyres scrubbing to bald in 5,000 miles. Ever heard of a VCU? It's evil and the forces of good in the world ensure that they fail regularly. When (not if) it seizes it'll knacker your tyres, diff mounts & internals, iRD mounts and internals, support bearings, gearbox etc etc. (read "drive train") Cure? You having a Giraffe? Spew a grand on a replacement cos LR have no goodwill budet. And if you do replace it the consequential damage already done will cost packet sin future. Or perhaps a zippo at £10 and pay the £150 excess is a better solution?
Sensor problems - err refer above.
Scraping steering, rumbling and vibration from wheels - normal. Your choice to live with it or light it.
Cruise control not working - don't fix it, something else will go wrong instead. Maintain the fault on the basis that it will deter other gremlins. Anyway the cruise control is ****, is jerky and hunts for speed. Not exactly a torchable offence.
Freelander buying advice? = Don't.
What's it worth? = **** all.
Case closed. Pub shut. Go home and spend more time with your families.
