I am looking to buy a Diesel Freelander as a back-up vehicle.

Can anyone give me advice on the tiptronic gearbox? Has anyone had any problems etc?

I've had a BMW 7 series with tiptronic and had no problems at all...

many thanks in advance :)

Like all things freelanderish - when they work, they work well, but when they dont - take out a second mortgage. They can overheat when towing - so a bigger gearbox cooler is a good idea. Oil changes/top-ups are either a dealer job, or very fiddly (temperature critical) with a risk if you dont take care of buggering the complet box (see tech bulletin0002). Overall - one of the better auto boxes - the sports change can be a godsend.

The auto gearbox is brilliant, though the "tiptronic" side is not really that good. There is a small delay before it selects & the diesels limited rev range definitely affects it. I found it to be more trouble than it's worth & just leave the box in drive or slide it over for what they call sport mode. Should be called more noise, not much more power mode.

I find the combination Td4/autobox very good and even brilliant if this combination is assisted with a chiptuning or a powerbox. I have the impression both the engine AND the box need the extra power and love it when added. Things run more fluently and smoothly. (Now the difference is less noticed as mine is chipped since october 2001 but I remember my thoughts in the beginning were that the chipped Td4 behaved more or less the same as if the box was put in Sport.) As for the fuel consumption: use the same power as before and the consumption is less, use the available extra power and the consumption goes up. As they say, a working horse needs oats.....:D:D:D:D
