Hi,
My '69 SWB petrol was laid up for a while parked on the road - and when I moved house I wondered why the battery was dead. When I looked in the engine bay someone had stolen the battery, all the leads to it as well as the starter solenoid and all the attached leads to it as well!!

I've now got a new battery and starter solenoid and need a bit of guidance if anyone has some time?

I can see I need to connect + battery to solenoid, and then solenoid to starter motor. But where do I connect the spade terminal marked 'exciter' on the Britpart solenoid I've been sold?

Also - does anyone know (or could possibly measure) the lengths of leads I need from the + battery to the solenoid, solenoid to the starter motor and also - battery to the normal earthing point for the battery? I need to get these cables made up :)

Thanks very much for any help - really appreciated!

Rich

Can I just spend a few minuites being angry on your behalf. I have a friend in Winterbourne Basset who's very handy with things like this, I'm sure he's give you some practical advice for a very modest sum / beers. Would you like me to gie him a call?
One way to do the leads is to go to a scrap yard and just get the longest leads you can, Merc C class (I beleive) have the battery in the boot, that will give you one end made up then you can cut the length and buy the ends and make them up. Could be quite a big saving. I have a padlock on my bonnet.

Thanks Rob, I too now have a padlock on the bonnet A mate works for a lorry firm and can get the leads made up for me, just need to know the length!

Laid up for a while parked on the road ? How come something that happened. It probably takes about 5-10 minutes to do that; in other words it takes totol brass neck. Could you fill in the details?

Battery positive to solenoid (I'm asuming yours is on the bulkhead?) then solenoid to starter. Neg to chassis earth and from the same chsssis earth to the earth bolt on the strater end or one of the starter bolts. Add a decent bit as you don't want any to pull tightand you need space to move them a bit to get to things.
