hi can any one help me with a timing problem on a 19 j td engine i have set timing marks as per manuel it says that engine should be no1 at tdc but the timing marks set 2&3 pistons are at the top if i put wood ruff key to timing mark on caseing the engine locks up on valves but when i timed engine first time on these marks every thing was ok now locking up when set to ep mark on crank pulley engine turns over fine but only ran for a few seconds any help would be appreceated thank martin:confused:

If you put the pin in the special tool (bolt with an ole with a drill in it) in the clutch cover this should automatically put the pistons in the right position to set the timing marks up.

It sez in the dowload manual off here that it uses the peak of No 1 exhaust cam to set the timing, to me that sounds like No 1 exhaust valve should be fully open not the piston at TDC. You say you had it running Are you sure it was the timing that caused it to stop an not lack of fuel or sumthink.

yep def timing plenty off fuel checked stop selonoid working changed fuel pump but both del fuel diesel at head still scraching me head also set timing to e/p mark on front pully cos i got same as you

It is a FOUR CYLINDER FOUR STOKE engine.

Unless the flywheel has been bolted on in the wrong position (which I think is not possible) then

the timing hole in the flywheel WILL set cylinders 1 and 4 at the top, BUT it could be "firing" on either 1 or 4. Once you have this set and the pin in place, use a lump of chalk to mark the crankshaft pulley on its top edge so you can see it coming round to the top the next time you turn it. It is useful to know when it approaches TDC.

So, you take the rocker cover off ..... and you rotate the engine again watching the rockers on NUMBER FOUR cylinder - the last two rockers at the back of the engine. As your chalk mark comes to the top either the next time or the one after (it MUST be one of them) you will see the LAST rocker letting the valve UP, and immediately the second last rocker shoving its valve DOWN. This means that Number ONE cylinder is close to top dead centre on a FIRING stroke.

Now pin the flywheel through the hole in the housing by wiggling the engine over just enough to engage the pin.

Then do the rest of the timing from there.

OK?

You must be an old bastid like me c, most of the yung yens need a pooter, and a bandaleroo of special tools. Good to see somebody going back to basics.

I timed my NAD up with no tool - i lined up the little dimples in the 3 pulleys at the front of the engine with the little arrows cast into the casing, it worked first time then. Once I put some new push rods in.
thanks boydy but with the head off the timing dot on the crank bring 2and 3 pistons to the top i wondered if this was right even my local landy shop says it dont sound right cheers martin

Could you be 180 degrees out with the crank turning twice for every single revolution on the cam, I know it was a common mistake in the past

Then you are not looking at the right marks to set the crank to TDC one and four!

You MUST first use the pin into flywheel plan to establish TDC 1/4.
Do this with the crankshaft pulley in place.
THEN you MAY find the nick on the edge of the pully and the timing pointer it should line up with, which are almost certanly NOT at the top as you look at them. But, DIESEL engine usually do NOT have these timing marks, AND the woodruff key slot is NOT milled into the shaft on the top at TDC 1/4!

You get the idea?
You MUST set TDC 1.4 using (1) the pin into the flywheel, and (2) the valves of cylinder 4 "rocking".

If you don't, mangled pushrods and / or bent valves will result.

Just what "timing dot on the crank" are you talking about?

There is ONE reliable way to establish TDC in this engine and you have been told it half a dozen times now.

yep got all that charles and done as per your invaluble instuctions i have found out today the fly wheel is from another engine and is why it dosnot line any thing up proply the timing dot is on the crank witch i was told to use as a back up to the fly wheel this is why iam having probs with it not that i ant taking your experiance on board thanks for your advice
