An electric water pump is an additional pump to allow a greater flow of water around the cooling system, thereby creating a more uniform coolant temperature and allows for the coolant to be pumped for a short period of time after engine switch-off to reduce cavitation. There are a couple of threads which go into this in some detail. I believe that the kv6 engine is also prone to hgf, like the 1.8. The kv6 is definately prone to thermal hotspots in the engine which cause localised boiling and cavitation, reducing heat ransfer at the very point it is required most. Craig Davies make a very good system.
As for how much - somewhere between £150 and £250, plus fitting - it is, however an easy diy job.
