The land of the almost free :)
I have a 200 tdi disco engine in my defender. How difficult is it to do a timing belt change for someone with reasonable skills with a spanner.

I have looked at the YouTube video and it looks straight forward enough!

My local indi says he would charge between 4 and 6 hours at 30 per hour + about £100 for the genuine land rover kit.
Is this reasonable?

Not done a 200,but done my 300 a couple of times.Pretty easy job if your good with spanners.Bought a Gates belt of local motor factors for £25.00

Your indie guy sounds dear to me

Good price per hour but he is way off on the time and the cost of the bits. Should only take you two hours if that and the kit is only about £50 with gaskets.

Did my mates 300 with him and it only took us 2 hrs whilst messing around lol

I have a new belt and idler plus gaskets. Brought for mine but I have timing gears so don't need it. £30 all in including postage if ya interested.

300 is easier than 200 because you don't have to deal with the seized bolts where the water pump gallery goes in to the block through the timing case. I had to take entire timing case off which took ages. If you're equipped to deal with snapped bolts and doing helicoils etc then do it yourself :)

The hardest part of the job is undoing the crank pulley bolt.. and then doing it up again! It is up to some ridiculous torque.
If you don't have the means to stop the crank rotating, or indeed withdraw the bottom pulley from the crank nose with a puller- let your garage do it.

I have just bought this kit for £36.95 as doing mine very shortly.

It includes the puller and everything you need tool wise to keep the timing correct.

Land Rover Diesel Engine Timing Tool Kit for 200Tdi, 300Tdi 2.5D (12J) 2.5TD | eBay

Its the same one as this

Timing Kit 2.5NA/TD/TDI Island 4x4 - Specialists in Land Rover and Range Rover Parts and accessories for all models. UK and worldwide mail order.

But for half the price.

I'm going to use the breaker bar method to undo the crank bolt, one question I have is how do you do it back up so tight?

.

never liked using impact wrenches to do up things with gears and cranks and such. always thought there was too much shock going in to it!

That won't do it up again. Tightening properly is critical otherwise it loosens and trashes the crank nose. I made a holding tool out of angle iron, it does the job but you can't beat the custom-made tool like the one difflock sells.

Mine has never come undone and had to do belt 2 times in last 4 yrs as bio noshed belt via pump seal leak-use loctite as well though
