Timing belt change 200 Defender

about to get a couple of jobs done on my 1990, 200tdi defender. One of them is to change the timing belt. A question I have is how often should the belt be changed. I was surprised by my Landy guy when he said it should be changed every 36000 miles.
Second question is , when changing the timing belt is it best to change the water pump.
reason I ask is i had a Renault Scenic ( piece of sh1t that was) and when changing timing belt on that they automatically changed the water pump at the same time.

when water pumps are driven by cam belt changing the pump is a very good idea .on a tdi if pumps ok refit, it has no effect on cam belt and if fails doesnt require front cover been removed

Well worth buying the cheapo timing/puller kit from ebay, saves aggro if bottom pulley is tight on crank.
The britpart cambelt kits are good, come with Dayco belt and all pulleys/seals/gaskets needed.

Bearmach kits are what I use, come with a Dayco belt and proper ING branded tensioner.

Interval is 60,000 miles - or 24,000 if used in 'arduous' conditions. If you are regularly going swimming at pay-and-play sites for example and the belt gets wet/muddy then I would go with the latter. A good reason to ensure the wading plugs are fitted and the timing case seals intact before wading.

I have gone with the Paddock timing kit as I had to order a couple of other things. It's done about 60000 miles since the last change so I am about right. It goes on tracks and in the forest quiet often but no real mucky stuff. I did do a trip across Morocco last April and its going again April 2016. My Landy guy said it shouldn't take him long to do as I have fitted an electric Kenlowe fan and removed the rad cowling which makes it easier to do the job.

I did one barely 2 weeks ago. It's not a difficult job at all especially if no bolts play up. Be especially gentle with the long bolts to the right of the water pump that go through the water jacket. Apparently they have a habit of snapping. I encountered no such problems and was done in three hours (including a couple of tea breaks). Just take your time, work methodically and clean everything up thoroughly. A smear of copperslip on water pump bolts will ensure that everything comes undone the way it should next time round.

Must admit...did mine recently. First ever timing belt change. Actually enjoyed it! So much simpler and han many would have you believe! I bought the timing lock pins...very handy.
