Just do a Google for Helicoils. Lots of suppliers, also some U-Tube videos just search for Helicoils again. This one is just to show the basics of using a Helicoil but if you search down the list you will find heads being worked on too. Helicoil | Thread repair - YouTube

I have read that timesert is a better fixing than helicoil but new territory for me so not sure if either strong enough for head

I haven't used Timesert only Heliciols. There are lots of videos on u-tube showing both. If you need to tap to the bottom of the thread you can buy taps that do that. You would start with one that guides the first few threads before tapping down. You would then use another tap that doesn't have these to go to the bottom.

Timesert is maybe better than an Helicoil but a lot harder to fit. You need to counter bore the fitment for a start. Also, i'll bet a Timesert kit is megga bucks more than an Helicoil kit.

What is the consensus as to whether a helicoil will work for a head bolt when it went the whole thread came out with the bolt

was the thread that came out a steel coil ,heli coils or recoils as i use are more than adequate for ali blocks ,is common for new ali housings etc to come with them already fitted as they are stronger than a bare ali thread ,when you screw the bolt in as well as the force trying to rip thread up some is forcing helicoil into head sideways

The thread that came out was Ali but yes that makes sense so will get a kit and cross fingers and toes

Next time you tighten your head. Lightly lubricate each bolt. Torque down to start position. Wait a while for things to settle. Then go over it a couple of times again in proper order. Then dot the upper head of each bolt with a paint marker in the 12 o'clock position. After first 90 all marks should be at 3 o'clock. After second 90 all should be at 6 o'clock.

Thanks Wammers I am back home and have the bolt and am pretty sure it is a 10 mm 1.5 thread so will set about replacing thread

I think I've got time serts in my new block,purchased a top hat block from halbeck engineering and the thread holes had these fitted I'm sure,looked much stronger than a Helicoil,but They look harder to fit with probably more machining required as they are bigger diameter,the previous block I had was helicoiled and the thread tore right out th block ,maybe was a poor repair to begin with but I would go for times serts over helicoils.also consider using arp stud kit less likely to pull the threads as your not having to turn it in the thread while under a lot of pressure,if you know what I mean

timeserts or at least the ones ive seen are only like screwing in a stud that has a threaded hole inside ,as said helicoils are pushed out into block by tightening of bolt
