Now how about if I can find you a ceremonial yacht or perhaps a royal barge?

Would you be interested in that?

Maybe for a charity project or something.
My own boat is well suited to my needs, and should last me a lifetime.

I don't usually do barges, might make an exception for a nice old spritsail Thames jobbie, or one of the old Dutch Barges with riveted cast iron plate hulls and elephant ear sideboards. :)
My mate used to sail them over from Rotterdam, and sell em for liveaboards on the Thames. Kerr-chinggg, and then back on the plane to get another! :D

I believe the flow of Dutch barges is now coming back this way. Tell your mate he can cash in doing the reverse of what he used to do!

Sadly, he is no longer with us. He spent the proceeds on a big seagoing yacht, and went off round the world. Got run down by a container ship while on autopilot in the South Pacific.
I like the canal, because I prefer being alive.

Wow, sad story. If you don't mind me asking, where is the liability that situation? Is it a 'give way to weight' type thing or is there a waterway code to follow?

Normal rules of the road apply everywhere. The way they are applied may vary depending on if it is a British ship involved or a Panama registered one.

Some might say running on autosteer at night where there is a possibility of meeting other shipping is not that good an idea either.

Another friend was killed when the catamaran he was skippering for a client overturned at night off the South African coast. They found the end of his lifeline trailing in the water, no body was ever recovered.

Old Cornish saying. The Sea has little mercy, The Rocks have none.

Reminds me why I don't like water very much. :(

I love water. :)

There are different ways of looking at things. Both my friends died doing something they loved, and it was quick. Which is better than dying a slow death in pain, or as a dribbling vegetable with dementia.

I often used to think about that before paddling out in big surf.

These days I stick to inland because I am getting a bit old and fat.

damn it was done up back in 1968 and i wonder if it has been inside a good shed or somewhere dry as there would be rust under the body most likely.and the engine bay looks quite old same for other bits and pieces, i think its asking price is a little high but if done up or refurbished would get a good price but only as a collectable car not a daily drive.

If he was under sail power he should have had right of way over a motored vesssel I thought. Not suggesting this alters the sad outcome in any shape though.

This sounds a bit like the Dutch cyclist attitude - just because it is your right of way - it doesn't necessarily mean it is prudent to proceed!

At some point or other the laws of physics will succeed all other laws (!) - big oil tanker will plow over top of sail boat and not even notice.

Absolutely. I'd rather give way and live, than carry on and be dead but knowing I'd had right of way!

Totally agree, having experienced a very similar situation in the early hours one pitch black (no moon) morning a few years ago, heading from Poole to Alderney, you keep your eyes peeled. In my situation, the larger vessel spotted us a few hundred yards away and put a huge search light on us (possible military boat maybe) but made no attempt to change course. We were under sail using autopilot but remained on deck throughout the journey. Wondering now if it was the US Navy! :)

No! They wouldn't have spotted you.
