... And there was me starting to think that you had replaced it with an all singing, all dancing, all in one dizzy, a coil for each cylinder and built in leads, when all it appears to be is a contactless points setup!

I had one of these contactless systems on one of my early Series, and at the time it was cheaper than having to replace the points and condenser ... around a fiver as opposed to about six quid for the mechanical setup!

The only problems I had was that on occasion it used to miss, and that was easily sorted by cleaning the cam replacement and the sender unit with meths.

For some reason they liked to pick up enough oil/dust/whatever to make it a bit unhappy! ;)

I had the optronic system, and found it to be excellent.
To partially seal the system, I used a "conformable silicon spray" from RS components. This is used on some marine systems. It sprays on, and forms a semi hardened coating.
Back to the problem - as above, a strobe will help eliminate any electrical issues.
I don't like the sound of "cutting out". It shouldn't happen. I think you have a carb problem. Can you put the old one back on?

Yes, my old weber did that when i'd got mixture/idle speed just a bit too low. I can't remember if it needed more air or more fuel at idle to cure cutting out...

ive guessed a bit at setting carb up, the instructions I got with new weber carb are useless.

Anyone got an idiots guide to setting up a weber without a tacho?

I started her, turned idle down to what I thought was a nice idle, screwed in mixture screw to lean it out until it ran rough, un screwed mixture screw to richen it until it ran rough and then screwed screw in halfway between those two points.

am I way off the mark here?

That sounds right, at least that's what I do. Before setting the mixture, set it to a fast idle then do the mixture adjust then drop the idle.

Colour tune is useful for idle mixtures, not as good as a lambda though.

Just a thought - does anyone do plug chops with car (wot up a hill then kill motor, coast to halt and look at plugs). Used to do that all the time when tuning bikes.

I've got a multimeter (electrical engineer by trade) and I use a strobe to time at the minute..
I'm guessing idle rom at the moment

cheers guys, new accuspark dizzy, new dizzy cap, new accuspark sport coil, new plugs, new leads. Im fairley certain the electrical side is ok, alternator is ok and a brand new heavy duty bosh silver battery.

p.s anyone ever sealed up the dizzy to prevent splashes of water in floods?

thinking about some hylomar between dizzy cap and dizzy (no points so shouldn't need to open it. Maybe some silicon where the coil leads enter dizzy. HT leads rubbers are fairly tight.

anything else?

Marigold on dizzy, condom on coil. Job done:D
