Before springing for a new fuel pump, get a can of air (yes, they do exist)

and blow your lines back. Should only take 20 minutes or so and could save you thirty odd quid.

Changed the pump (as I had one as a spare) ticking all gone. Blew down the lines while there. Thanks for the advice. Worry I haven't tightened the lines back up enough as it took more than normal cranking today to start, will keep nipping them up.

I will just add that I know a few people who fitted electric lift pumps and a couple who even fitted electric vacuum pumps on their 300s in order to get rid of some of the rattly ticking noises it made.

If I remember rightly it was Audi vac units and facet pumps, I have even seen electric water pumps being fitted these days as they are quite reliable so long as you use reputable brands/makes.
