Iv been away with work for a while but I finally had a chance to look at her today,

turns out Iv snapped a push rod, the one closest to the bulkhead. I don't think it's caused any other damage, it's only a few quid for a new one so going to replace it tomorrow and hopefully that will sort it out.
Take a good look at the brass pushrod seat in the block for the slightest bit of damage. Pushrods usually bend though not snap
 
I had this on our old 200Tdi....turned out the crank pulley wasn't done properly by the PO and caused the sprocket to chatter and knock the crank to cam timing out and valves met piston snapping No8 push rod.....

I'd pull the front cover off and have a look inside....

Our recent acquisition (the '88 110) has just had the timing belt done and the same thing had happened to that too.....

this is the broken push rod, it's perfectly straight. Very strange indeed .

Exactly the same as our old 200Tdi.... I'd defo check your crank to cam timing.
