Thoughts on signwriting

I've been thinking of signwriting the van sides of my 110 for a while but there have always been problems.

First, I do like to go greenlaning in it, and I'm worried it will quickly look very tatty if it gets scratched. I don't mind getting the paintwork scratched but I would mind the stickers getting ripped apart.

Second, I can't use anthing magnetic because of the aluminium body.

So, I was thinking of having another sheet of aluminium cut to the same size as the van sides which was signwritten, and bolting it to the side so that i would just have a few bolts to undo every time I want to go laning.

Anyone think this would work? Any other ideas?

Why not go down the magnetic route then glue thin steel sheets of the same/smaller size on the inside of the side panels?

Ok it will add a few kgs of weight but your not going to have holes drilled/spikes sticking out of the sides.

also you can remove them when you want...if the local kids don't first :rolleyes:
 
What do you want to write on the side? my personal view is if its not your work car or company logo etc its better to leave it original. Nothing says small man with small c@*k like a big ass 4x4 sticker on the side of a perfectly good vehicle. It's normally found on the side of a NISSAN
 
If it is for work, then sign write away.

Be aware one of my best friends owns a sign company, he refuses to sell magnetic ones as they fall off or get nicked etc.

One on the back way work but the sides always lose them.

i had a full wrap on a commercial van for 3 years and it lasted well, but i didn't take the van laning..

if you want some technical input pm me and i will pm the sign mans details

Won't this ruin the aluminum? and it would be really easy to nick too?

If you go down the extra bolt-on panel, why not make it hinged in the middle (horizontally or vertically.) One half permanenty fixed and one half with some sort of clip so that it simply folds up as and when required?

Thats a pretty good idea, wish I had thought of that! :) I'm going to have to think about how to make it look neat when folded out now though.

advertising on the side of your wagon makes you commercial.

do you want to pay commercial insurance and get charged whereever you go?

contents insurance is expensive.......
 
And be careful if your towing something heavy too cos if it's signwritten and used for towing heavy things you need a tachograph as far as I'm aware because your using it for business (even if you arent it looks like you are) my mate got cautioned about it before towing his minidigger with his signwritten Landy, so he just took the stickers off it was cheaper than a tacho! Lol

I never tow anything with it, and even if i did, I could just take off the extra side panels, right?

I think what he might be saying is if your defender looks like a commercial vehicle you might get noticed by the LAW alot more often. do you need commercial plates or license in the uk? Could get sticky.

The problem I have, is that my Customers are the type of people that walk Green Lanes and complain of us lot using byways etc, so I gave it a miss, as you don't want bad advertisement for your Company!

What I would say tho, why don't you just get a spare wheel cover with your business details on? People driving by won't get chance to pick your number up from the side of the vehicle, but people who are following you will.

You can also take it off as and when you want!

It is also cheaper, you can swap it onto other Defenders and looks pretty smart.

I agree, my mate has the same issue. So he got an A board for when he is working in the public view!
