Thoughts and ideas on how to get the best out of series 3. 2/4 diesel

I've had both 2.25D and 2.25P engines old and recon'd in the past and when towing heavy loads the diesel's was under powered but good on fuel and the petrol's had the power but was bad on fuel, I wanted both and the tdi suited my needs, don't get me wrong the 2.25D/P engines are a great engine but not for me as I just think the tdi engine is a far better engine in a series for todays driving :)
 
santana were turbo charging the 2.25d in the late 70s, and goes without saying land rover turbod the 2.5d in the 80s. the 200tdi is of course a straight evolution of the same engine. why ? market trends and disgruntled buyers who wanted more than a terrifying 60 horsepower pushing a 1.5 tonne vehicle around ( + more with cargo or trailer) i've had a few 3rd gear slogs up long motorway passes in my empty 88" petrol. god knows what its like a a 2.25d and horse box or car trailer on the back, low range ?

i agree that these vehicles are becoming historically significant and originality demands a premium, but is it really a shame putting a more powerful land rover engine of the same form factor, in a land rover. what about thousands of dihatsu, essex v6, rover v8, perkins etc conversions ?
 
Don't forget the Mercedes OM617 conversions too

(Now that's one I've always wanted to do - I've even got the engine ready for it)
