Is yours beyond repair?
Glad you are all ok.
A lot of trailer/caravan 'incidents' are caused by slightly low pressure tyres, this allows the tyre to flex/overheat causing a blow out. Always check pressures with a good quality gauge and replace any tyres over 6/7 years of age. Manufacture dates are stamped on tyres using week/year code (i.e 4509)
As for a replacement car have you considered 'upgrading' your licence to manual gearbox, will give you a lot more choice for now and in the future and could also save money in the long run as auto's are generally more expensive to buy and a lot more to repair if anything goes wrong?

Underinflation of trailer tyres is a common issue, most inflate to a fairly high pressure. My cattle box runs 68 psi, would guess a horsebox about the same.
Another common problem is underinflation of the rear tyres on tow vehicle. Should be blown op to 40-46 psi, depending on the vehicle and the tyres, many don't bother.
Personally I much prefer autobox for towing, much less stress on driver and vehicle. They are expensive to repair, but few clutches on a high mileage vehicle will survive suddenly being used to tow heavy trailers.
