Hi, I've just replaced the starter on on my 2.5TD 90 because I thought it was faulty...it seems not. When I use the new one I have exactly the same problem as the old one. The problem seems to be that the teeth that engage with the flywheel are slipping on the flywheel. So when I turn the starter it sounds like a machine gun. The flywheel does not appear to have slipped moved dropped or whatever and when the engine is bump started it runs sweetly - there are no unusual or untoward noises.

Its a 2.5TD of 1990 vintage with about 150K on the clock. The alternator is new.

Can anyone help me out with a diagnosis. I need help soon - I'm getting low on hand cleaner!!!

Thanks for anything you can offer............Ian

Sounds like the solenoid isn't shoving the starter gear into place hard enough. Is your battery really low on charge? That can cause a solenoid not to engage properly or could be just partially sticking. That's my take on it.

Hope it helps.
Cheers,
Marcus.

Thanks Marcus, The battery is pretty flat and it possible that it was a bit low before. I'll give it a good charge now and see if that does the trick.

Cheers....ian

WAHHAYYY......Thar she blows.......Thanks Marcus. That did it...first turn of the key. The only thing now is I'm wondering is where is all my electricity going, however I'm off to play in a muddy puddle and i'll worry about that later.

Thankyou...Let me buy you a beer one day.
