Discovery 5 Thinking of buying

Hi guys. Probably not the best place as I'm sure there's a bit of a bias.....

But I'm looking around and the best car for me looks to be a new Discovery. 3l diesel, V6, HSE + a few options.
I need it for towing (another Discovery for off-roading), commuting and some long-distance travel. Looked into the VW Touareg, Audi Q7, BMW X5, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Mercedes GLE and a few others that can't tow enough weight.

What's everyone's thoughts? Did I miss a car I should check out? Anything I should be cautious off with the Discovery?
 
Save yourself a few grand and buy a low mileage used D5 instead. Then keep the savings in the bank for future repairs or maintenance. ;)

The D5 is a far more capable vehicle that anything you've listed above, although you omitted the RR Sport, which would get my vote, if the budget stretches to a nearly new one.;)

I don't need the new one for off-roading, I want it for comfort to get to the off-roading! And perhaps rescue the other one when that inevitably happens. As for comfort, it is second to none from the ones I've tried so far. The RR Sport isn't really my cup of tea, to be honest.

The last reason I was going for new over used was that it would come with the manufacturer's warranty. Now from my experience of pickups, they all come with 5 years so I'm shocked that all the cars only have 3 year warranties so that does make me wonder...

JLR warranty can be extend beyond the initial period up to a max of five years, as I did with my Jag i have now.
My old RR had an initial one year then two years extra, my disco, which I still own, was the same, both a waste of money for me as i never had any major issues during both three year periods, with only a diff oil seal replacement with the disco but i would go back to an LR... so common :)

The D5 is a seven seater, no option so if u don’t won’t them that’s unfortunate, and of course it’s a diesel :(
 
I didnt drive it, but colleagues found the ingenium 2.0 Disco to be a poor tow car. The Shogun and D4 tdv6 were excellent, but this is towing 3tonnes ish. Could be due to lower kerb weight on the newer models and stability being compromised. Depends how often and how much you tow?

I'm used to towing 2.7-3.5t with my pickup and that weighs less than the Discovery 5 - no issues there. The other thing is I'm going with the 3 litre diesel V6 as well as a few extras so I imagine its weight will be substantially above that of the base spec, 2l model. That would hopefully counteract the negative effects you suggested.

As for how much I tow... honestly not that much, though it may increase when everything opens up and if I can get my off-roader fixed. Though I do help my Dad out when he needs towing done and that could easily be 700 miles. Haha!

Good to know I can extend the warranty. May well go for that, depending on how much it costs! As for the new Discovery being 7 seats, that could very occasionally be helpful but it's definitely of no hindrance so suits me.


I'm fairly sure I've made my mind up at this point so thanks for the suggestions, guys. Now I just have to make sure I really, really, really want it and I'm not just going to spend the money and then regret it. In all honesty, I don't need a Discovery, my pickup does the job. I just don't like it. Haha!
 
If you don’t need 7 seats what about a late low miles l322 Range Rover or a l405, there coming down in price, powerful, 3.5ton towing, tons of comfort and no silly off center reg plate like the D5.

Got some information on this.

Local LR specialist used to use a late D4, excellent tow car, easily handle another LR product on trailer. (used Discoveries since 1)

PXed for a D5, not stable at all, so took it back to dealer, they suggested filling back end with concrete, he took back the D4.

Now uses a RR for towing.

D5 is not in the same league as D3 or D4 as a tow car.

So I would suggest very late D4 or a RR.

This is what the LR place near work did, D5 was a poor tow car compared to D4
 
We had the same dilemma, and in the end got a new touareg v6 black edition. We weren't that impressed with the new D5, after having too many discos to mention. Plus the VW Deal was far better than any other dealer and the tech on the car is fantastic. Overall we are very happy with our choice, and that's not getting into pound per option, engine performance etc.

Interesting. I really liked the tech in the Touareg but found the gearbox to be horrific! It did move a lot quicker though. As for the deal, Land Rover are offering £7250 towards the car which makes the price the same as the Touareg and it's overall a much nicer car from my short experience with both.

I've decided that if I'm buying a Disco, I'm buying a new Disco 5. I now have to convince myself that a new Disco is the right choice and that I shouldn't just go and get my past favourite which was a Navara D40... Can probably get a 15 or 65 plate one of them for £10k or less which is a much better deal, eh? Haha! Other option of course is to suck it up and stick with my current NP300 that I don't like.

Keep money in bank until current situation is resolved.
 
You need to time it right I guess, as the VW dealer contribution was very handsome when we got ours and also with 0% no other dealer could compete.

Seems that APR has gone up quite some since lock down

I think the issue is they dont own the cars, either the mannufacturer does or a stocking loan finance house.
So they cannot give them away, but they are going to have to get creative to get people to part with their money, and the smart people are going to keep on running what they already have and see how the market pans out.

I have noticed that late 2016 D4s have really taken a price hit in the last 6 months or so, then is was 30k for a tidy motor with sensible miles, now its mid to low 20s.
