TBH , That is NOT the way you come across. You were very negative. Now upon seeing the photos of how you messed up ,I can understand how you are angry at having purchased a POS, but rather than playing the idiot in the way you approach this, Why not publish your story with photos to show what can happen. It will be of more value than you being a negative nancy.

+1 as a newbie joining here its hard to find information like this.. and even the general questions ive asked are hard to come across unless you are here a while
There are a lot of 90's out there that look like nobber's did. Which is why it's not straightforward answering your question and explaining what to look for. You only joined the forum today. I would forget that 90 and spend a few months reading stuff on here and then buy something in the spring. Read. read and read some more.

Please take someone who knows what they are looking at. If you do not know someone then find someone. If you cannot find someone then be prepared to spend a lot of money on unexpected costs.

Yes, as well as read, read and read some more, I go along with having someone along who knows what to look for. It would be cost effective for you to pay travel and 2 or 3 gallon of Guinness for one of us to come over. It would be a right fecking hardship, but I'd do it. ;) :p

You know what Neilly your right, I'm going to put up a thread, it will be picture heavy but hopefully it will be some sort of informative guide so people like @davidreid can al least see what they are getting them selves into. David, it isn't as straight forward as you might think doing up an old Landy, its time consuming, its expensive, its full of pot holes, let downs , researching parts, finding decent parts, its hard work, when you peel away the layers you find problem after problem after problem and before you know it you are so deep into it both financially and emotionally that you have to carry on until its done, at this point its no longer fun, its a mission. Second hand parts such as doors (which will be rotten) for that vehicle arnt cheap and a lot of parts such as good LT77 boxes are like hens teeth.
There is a lot to learn and a lot can go wrong if you don't do any research.
So, Ill start on that thread. In the mean time look for rebuild threads, read them, try to understand the changes Defenders went through throughout the years, gearboxes, engines etc. That vehicle is 1988 so its a Ninety not a Defender, that means more than just the badge on the front.

Working on it, it will take me a few days, saving to text format for now and will load it into a thread when its done, Ive forgotten most stuff now, gearbox prefix letters etc, TD5 bulkhead alterations for 200tdi vehicles, axle variants, even the fuse box and wiring on these early ones is pretty , well , prehistoric would be a good term for the electrics.

Great, as I say. I have also started to write a basic "buy a fender" . see above.

So you can always add to that .

theres no lesson there then ,youd pay more to get a scrap series now, ive had to replace chassis on 10k td5s and patched 2.5s

They reckon the quality of steel was a little hit and miss through out the years, my chassis is ten or so years old, the rear cross member has started delaminating and the bottom rails have rusted through, that was a genuine LR chassis. Ten years ago a scrap series could be had for 150 quid, a tidy ,running , mot'd S2 could be had for around a grand.

Unless there is a lot of other stuff, and the problem with a 1988 vehicle is, if it isn't rotten it soon will be, so if you throw a load of money into it at this stage you may well get 5 years out of it or it could start showing through this time next year, I reckon that one probably hasn't been looked after, its not had any money spent on it in a long time.

as i said ive had to replace chassis on td5s which includes the issues with body mounting points
