Good evening all. Following a recent move to a very rural area of North Devon I'm dipping my toe into the wonderful world of 4X4.
After much looking around at the many options have decided to go for a HSE TD4 auto and would be very grateful if anyone on here could give me some pointers?
Do all TD4 autos make a whining sort of noise from the front end when accelerating?
What sort of MPG should I expect?
is there any major issues I should look out for?

Many thanks :)

I bought my HSE 2006 TD4 auto a month ago and 1800 miles. I have already done a few mods to mine to make it more economical. Expect about 25mpg around town/short trips and up to 40mpg on a run. Drive at 70mpg and the fuel consumption isn't great, drive at 80.... I drive at about 60/65. It is heavy and has the aerodynamics of a barn door, albeit a smaller barn door than a Disco/RR.

Do you need the raised driving position or just 4x4? If the latter there are a few other alternatives.

There are some really good threads on Landy Zone on the good and the bad. There is one titled what you need to know about Freelander.

If the car is whining walk away. Look at as many as you can. Make sure everything is there (VCU & propshafts) VCU last on average about 70k.

could your whining noise be tyres but have a good loo under the bonnet down at the bottom pulley ,is there and metal dust around it .it could be a few things but good luck and what mileage has it done . I have a 2006 hse auto best thing since sliced bread

Thanks all, I've managed to test drive a few more and the whine was definitely wrong. The last 2 I drove where lovely and smooth :)
The best of these is a very tidy 2005 sport premium model with 73k on the clock.
Cant quite work out what the differance between the sport & normal ones are other than the badge that says ''sport'' on the side :D
Any thing I should look out for?

Thanks again :)

Apart from the interior seat trim and the wheels, there is very little difference - certainly nothing 'sporty' - apart from the fact that the Sport is 25mm lower than the other models.

picked the car up from Birmingham and had a faultless 3 hour drive home to Devon. All seems good at the moment but will have to drive a few more miles before the warranty runs out.
Only faults I can find so far is the n/s back door speakers not working and a knocking that seems to be coming from the suspension when going over rough ground, so overall very happy so far :)

your back door speak will be the wiring more than likely , as they had cheap imported wire put into the doors just try cleaning the ends .your knocking could be drop links on the front

sorry hippo I do not like the Freelander 2 much and I hate the back door with no wheel on the back

I thought I was the only person to think this. Hardly any new offroad vehicles seem to have the spare mounted on the back. And a lot of them have doors that open upwards like an ordinary hatchback instead of being hinged on one side like a door. Why is this? A lot of them just look like estate cars on an offroad wheelbase.
