Thinking of Buying 2003-2009 Diesel Range Rover

I picked up a 2005 RRS 2.7tdv6 with 180k on the clock it had a oil leak i took the £2,600 gamble on it and come to find out it had the upgraded oil pump fitted but some knobhead didnt fit the seal correctly so after replacing the oil seal and cam belt etc it now runs beautifully no warning lights just perfect .well happy with this perchase very tidy and clean RRS

Nice to hear something positive Sean. I prefer automatic gearboxes as there is less to go wrong however the L322 seems to have a history of gearbox faults so I guess a manual is better? From what I read a poor battery will cause all sorts of computer faults. I guess any L322 that has a long history with one owner and is still looking and running OK will have all the initial faults rectified. I only do 8k a year and at the age of 70 I no longer drive a car hard or fast.

The L322 still has the rural Land Rover look unlike some of the later ones which look like the Beckham's designed them. As for repairs I am lucky to have a one man garage that only charges £20 an hour of the folding stuff. I have never taken a car to a main dealer in my life.

I appreciate this is a site for people who have problems and I am grateful for the help they have offered in the past. I discovered that the air suspension pump could be fixed for under a fiver with a kit from Ebay.

They don't make a manual L322.

Are you intentionally trying to insult those you have come to for advice?
First we're "not normal drivers", now we're all people "with problems".
You came here in 2008 because you had a problem.
You got help then buggered off, then came back in 2009 because you had another problem and you believed you had possibly screwed up due to " been a bit of a cheapskate over the years buying only cheap oil and changing it infrequently."
At that time you were paying £45ph for work :rolleyes:
You got help and yet again, instead of sticking around to try to help others, you buggered off.
For all we know you've been lurking since then , making use of the wealth of knowledge and help that is in these pages full of not normal drivers , with lots of problems. Or maybe just taking your vehicle to your £45ph twenty pound local garage.
Whichever it is, you came back to these not normal drivers, yet again, in 2015 to ask for advice on buying an L322 and got honest reviews. You didn't like them.
2016 still without joining in , or even trying to give help, to others struggling, you were back again asking for help. Which people freely and gladly gave. Then off you buggered, once again leaving a thread hanging.
Then joy of joys , you reappear in 2020, yet again, asking for advice on buying an L322. Yet again you were given an honest review by people who were living with them. You didn't like them. So yet again you disappear off the pages,
Then a few days ago here you appear again. Once more asking a bunch of people who are"not normal drivers, with "lots of problems" for advice.
If you think the owners and vehicles on these pages are so bad, why keep coming back? Wouldn't sense dictate you go ask "normal drivers", whose vehicles don't " have lots of problems" for advice?
Anyway, you ignore logic and sense , and here you are, with less budget than last year, and looking for cars in an older age range, because you 'hoped' the reviews would have changed in the last 6 years. The vehicle model you are asking about is now 6years older , yet somehow you 'hoped' that the issues the model has will have changed as the actual vehicles grow older? Once again, you are given honest reviews. And yep, once again you don't like them.
Accept the fact the L322 is a problem child. The ones you see pre-2010 in good condition are kept running because of people like those on this site, sharing their hard won experience and knowledge, in some cases expertise, with others. Without it many would be stuck, including the mechanics from independent garages, who use these pages, whether they admit it or not.
So your posts, looking down your nose at those who use these pages, are so far out of line they are in a different postcode!

In the days when I owned the Mk 1 1971 Range Rover I knew quite a few who had replaced the petrol engine with a Perkins diesel. I guess the problem with such mods these days is getting the computer to accept such mods. I would be interested to hear if anyone has ever put a Toyota Land Cruiser engine and gearbox in a RR.

Not heard of that. But I did used to know a chap with a 6/354 Perkins in a Range Rover.
Main problems were it ate clutches, destroyed the gearbox more than once, and snapped halfshafts for a pastime! :D

If you have been lurking for a while then you would know that a member has fitted a manual gearbox to an L322 which isn't a RRS. Try a search

one such member put a manual box in his L322. i told him he was mad. Works great when time comes to get rid i may even make an offer. he is mad though obviously :D

Hello old pilot thats was a informative thanks ive had 3 p38 but never a l322 so can not say what they are like but my p38v8 on gas was good for about 2 years
And well my p38 bmw diesel was brilliant never had a issue .
So when this RRS 2.7td v6 came for sale i thought give it a go anyway after fixing the oil leak today i took it for a drive and omg brilliant couldnt fault it ,iam a slow boy aswell lol

a friend of mine put a forklift engine in a RRmk1 and another pal put a tractor engine in 1 .(dont you just love Range Rovers ) ive biult loads hotrods bikes trikes etc over the years and like i allways say fix the weak link an well maintain it and soon your motor will be good

You pay no tax, you get no support!
Here's my pennies worth,
For exampIe,
I have no quarms with clients who supply there own parts, they are responsible for those parts being correct.
Waisted time is charged for.
Old parts go with them and sometimes this can be engines as well as shïtty old oil.
Also there is no guarantee offered and no support if there is a problem. A client yesterday supplied a second hand part he was assured worked.
He diagnosed his own car and told me it works.
4 hours later.... Nope it doesn't work. That's 4 hrs for me and another 4 to redo the work. Just because he wanted a cheap fix..
I'll work for cash, chèque, transfer....
But I don't work for nothing or buy people's parts. You be assured if there's an issue, your £20 per hour won't go far..
Auto boxes are less complicated? Get your self a quote for a rebuilt auto unit and one for a manual box and maybe try looking up some diagrams...
Someone à bit more impressionable may actually believe you.. :rolleyes:

I may be sceptical but I think you and @old pilot should get together or perhaps you already have, Redditch is in the West Midlands isn't it? I think everyone has lost the point of the original post or has Autumn brought out the trolls?:rolleyes:
