Think I just bricked my sat nav/tv screen

Currently it turns on but the screen is black but backlit. The radio knob light goes on and off when pushed, the cassette eject works and so does the mpg data etc on the speedo display. Has it had it and therefore requires replacement?

It started after I removed the radio and sat nav fuses trying to reset to unit to fix an issue with no sound from the tv as well as unable to select the cd changer or radio functions. I had read that the units can be bricked if not enough time was left after it was powered up but it was left for over 15 mins which I assumed would be ok.

I did initally think it was just powering up and rebooting as the manual says that after a power disconnect it can take around 15 mins for the unit to be fully operational. I have left it for 20 mins now though and nothing has changed.

If i have bricked it, is it the tuner in the back that will require replacement or the unit in the dash? How does this also relate to the functions of the tv sound and radio as I guess I would have to replace it anyway if those weren't working from the start?

Thanks all

You have to wait for the red LED to go out on the sat nav unit in the rear before power is removed or you scramble the memory, they can be re-flashed I believe.
Sounds like you have the common water ingress corrosion problem in the kit in the rear quarter, it's unlikely to be the screen itself IMO.

+1 Need to wait for the satnav light to go out before removing battery or fuses...

Make sure the lamp is out, then pull fuse 49 for 20 minutes....put back in and keep yer fingers crossed...

ALso during that 20 minutes, check ALL the connections in the rear left area for signs of corrosion and dodgy pins like Datatek says...

Keep them fingers crossed!

Thanks both but I think I'm screwed. Waited for the light to go out, removed fuse, 1hr wait and then tried it again. Can hear the unit in the back and in the dash power up when the fuse is inserted but screen stays all black (but backlit). Damn. And I had red about waiting for the red light to turn off before but totally forgot.

I've also checked all the connections and ejected the disk etc all to no avail.

So I am looking at a new unit or a reflash i suppose. Does anyone know a place I can get this done? I have searched but found no links.

Is there not a way to get everything else to function apart from nav facilities? I'll only use the tv and radio etc.

Surely this is quite a common problem as it'll do it everytime power is removed from the car minutes after it has been powered up?

It's a stupid design, I believe you can get a bypass link for the satnav. there is a place in Holland that can re-flash the satnav, I don't have details and my mate is away at present.
I still think it could well be corroded connectors though.

Thanks. Do you know roughly what sort of price it would cost to reflash as it would probably be a lot easier to buy a second hand unit if its just going to be a case of pulling the old one and putting in the new. Or do you think this might jave compatability issues.

The connectors all seem in pretty ok and I didn't touch any of them after it was working good, pulled the fuses, put it back and then it was broken so I doubt it could be anything else. Which ones are prone though? I will yank the sat nav unit out and check the back ones later as I've only checked the ones on the tv tuner.

you need to pull all the connectors and use a strong light to check for corrosion, it's not always immediatly obvious.

Hi. You should be able to just disconnect the Sat Nav to restore all screen functions albeit in a rather ugly font. If you've already done this and you still get nothing on the screen then as has been said, you need to check all connections.

I know a guy who serviced my DVD in the boot for £99. I have a screen for sale also. Took it out of mine when I upgraded.

Rach

Rach, I have a screen also but I havnt a clue what RR it fits, I bought it without checking first, it has two sockets one blue one white both about 8/10 pin if I remember does yours look the same

Woo hoo!! Disconnected the sat nav unit and got the screen working again. The graphics are just the same just without the sat nav option. Replugged in the sat nav unit on the off chance and pow, its all back working again!! Thanks guys.

Despite this I am still having the same issue as before I tried to fix it and subsequently broke it : No sound at all. I've checked all the connections in the boot and there doesn't seem any sign of corrosion. I've tried cd's, tapes, digi tv box but nothing comes out of the speakers at all unless its instructions from the sat nav itself or when using the parrot bluetooth system.

I suspect this has something to do a problem with the radio. Is this in the head unit or is it housed in one of the boxes in the boot? The radio seems to be stuck in MW band and none of the buttons seem to work. Only thing that ever changes is sometimes the radio display on the screen goes blank in all the boxes. Does anyone know what this could be?

I would still say corroded connectors, a pin corroded off, or water in one of the units..

Ok spent a further 3hrs trying to fix it today but still no joy. I removed the plastic floor covering and got access to the radio tuner box. Unplugged all wires from it and tried again. Still no sound. Checked all plugs and wires for any sign of corrosion and its all as clean as a whistle. Then I disconnected the amp and tried again. Still no luck. All reconnected and I'm still having no luck.

Has anyone any advice what I could check next? I assumed the radio box has to be connected to allow the cd changer and tape deck to work as when disconnected you lose the left hand knob on the head until altogether which you need to control them with. Also with the amp disconnected will the sound still work from the stereo? I know some land rovers have no amp as standard but don't know if there's a difference on wiring.

I suppose the next step is removing the head unit to check wiring etc at the rear of it. From my twisted logic I have two issues. One with the radio unit itself not be able to tune or select cd etc, and then the other not allowing any sound to be passed through the speakers except thats from the satnav or bluetooth.

Any recommendations greatly welcome!!
