Think I have a bit missing?

Hi guys I am new and have just obtained my first Freelander, reading around the forum I noticed posts about the engine tray or sump guards and that they are a pain to remove.

Mine has nothing, so I presume someone was to lazy to fit it back again. Now is it important in any way or can I leave it as it is. I have the skills and ability to make a sump guard if it is important, but the vehicle is only going to be a road car.

Your advice please

I yint certain but im sure i read somewhere that the frame the plaggy cover pop rivits to is akchoally STRUCTURAL !;)

Hello Mondo. Are you saying the inherent structural strength may be compromised?
 
I think I will play safe here and make myself a nice alloy, steel framed sump guard, it will look nice and give some protection if the sump does take a hit at some point in the future, and most of all I won't have to worry about the structural strength being compromised as that would not surprise me?

I will post some pics when I get the job completed, I have no rush as the car will not be on the road this month as I am waiting for the DVLA to sort me a V5 as the car came from auction with no docs and that can take weeks. Had my Freelander for 5 days now and all I can do is look at it sitting on the drive. YES I do know that a lot of them just sit there, but mine is running just great and I want to drive it and have some fun.

Its a good thing!

Metal one sounds a good idea.
 
Are they basically all the same shape and size? Will one from a 1999 1.8 k series fit my 2003 TD4 for example?

If it will fit I will certenly get one and modify it a bit, to look better as well as make oil changes easy.

Finally fitted a replacement sump guard today it came from a 1999 1.8 petrol. It all aligned up except a for couple of bumper fixings which i cut off. Checked it for clearance etc and drove 10 miles home no problems.

Then went out tonight and on full lock I have one hell of a vibration coming through the steering. So it looks like its coming back off tomorrow:confused: Up to now i have done 3000 trouble free miles :D

If you wanted problems, you should have bought a petrol Freelander with dodgy engine & transmission. You had 3000 trouble free miles till you started footering about with it. Lesson learned hopefully.
