Hi, having sold my defender I am considering looking at this. I'm told its a series 3 200tdi, although I cant see the turbo!

Is there anything I should be looking for and is there anything which looks wrong? Any help much appreciated as its a long way for me to travel, its selling for £8k euros which is quite a bit but cars are expensive here in Portugal.

Many thanks,

Mark

I didnt even think of it being a 300tdi, makes sense though, thanks. I thought the 300tdi was a very difficult fit.

Whatfield what makes you think its a 300tdi?
Looks very like my 200tdi when I had the 300 sound muffler fitted.
Best check for an engine number 200tdi 12L 13L 14L depending which version
300tdi 16L

can't help with the engine but as a truck it looks pretty sweet to me

I thought the 200 was better without the turbo in a series (not based on any knowledge, but I am sure I read that on here somewhere)

Thanks for your help, going to have a look at this one tomorrow

as its closer and I'm a little put off by the wiring, pipework and the not knowing how the engine and running gear is fitted on the other one, if they have skipped routing that I dont know what they have skipped where you cant see, weld on the intercooler is a little rough too. One thing you don't have to worry about here is the chassis (Apart from accident damage) and rust/rot. Service history is a massive problem though.

I didn't realise that was a sound muffler, my 200tdi in my range rover classic is driving me mad with noise, this coud be the answer

200

edit: looks pretty good. obviously not orig, since it has 200tdi, lt77 and lt230. plus discs, so axles different. and props.

i'd want a galv chassis at that price.

check chassis for rust, general look around for oil. give a test drive.

Be careful with lt77 lt230, input gear and shafts wear badly, check for clunks or vibration on the power. Check for smooth engine from cold and also that it has plenty of power. Fuel system may need looking at otherwise. What kills tdi engines is infrequent oil changes so check the oil and for signs of hg failure also. Has front prop got ujs still? If so, I would want cv axle on there for peace of mind.

these ??? ??

looks to be a quite well thought out conversion, Salisbury rear axle, disc conversion on the front axle at least and possibly on the rear, possibly a 90 servo and master cylinder, 200tdi engine (complete with turbo and intercooler) definitely, LT77 gearbox with LT230 transfer box, all sitting on parabolics

i'd also say it has P38 power steering

now because it appears to have freewheel hubs fitted i suspect the transfer box has been modified to be part time 4x4 just like a regular Series transfer box

if i was in the market for buying a heavily modified Series i'd definitely be looking at this one as whoever has done it gave it quite a bit of thought (i already own 2x 200tdi powered Series so i'm not in the market for another) oh and ignore the fact it's got uj's in the front axle, the world won't implode
