Thin welding

On the pics it looked as though the approach angle was too steep, and at 90 deg to the work.

Try it with an approach of between 30 & 45 deg with the rod leaning back at the same angle.

Before starting your run, stick the end on a piece of earthed scrap and let it get red hot first.

Putting it crudely, if your end ain't hot, the juices won't flow, and you won't get penetration!

Thanks for the advice guys... Jai.. you should know that Kai isn't one to take offence at practical advice. I will bring him over this week though... he may have more luck with your mig than he does with his own. I think I bought badly when I bought such a cheap one and he is finding the arc easier to get along with.

He is certainly enjoying it though. The results he got when he was making his wood burner were variable, to say the least, but they are solid.

Thanks for the pointers OldSeadog... I mentioned that to Kai and he actually grinned and said that he had thought perhaps the positioning was wrong, but he did experiment a bit with different angles and so on.

Definitely think it is worth him continuing... if you think those welds are bad you haven't seen mine! lol Of course part of the problem now, is that he has gone way beyond my area of expertise or experience. Consequently we are learning together... talk about the blind leading the blind! Still it is a great deal of fun!

Ryder just got a new 15KG roll and a tank full of gas! You are both welcome anytime I'm no Welder but he may get on better with the bigger Mig.

Arc is where everyone I know started usually on thick metal. Kai will suss it out he is persistant and so very keen.

Jai
