Thermostat housing thread stripped

Afternoon all,

My 110 is determined to test me. Was just popping the thermostat housing back together and noticed one bolt didn't get any tightening - it appears to have cleanly stripped the thread from the bottom half of the housing.

What's the best route to repair? I thought about drilling and tapping slightly larger but not sure if the casting will take it.

Or are there any inserts?

Or will I need to source a new housing?

That's annoying, when I did my son's one of the bolts snapped off, luckily I managed to get it out with the top housing off.
Guess you could try a bigger bolt, nothing to lose as you need to buy a housing otherwise.

Wrap polytetrafluoroethylene around the bolt and put it in

Not familiar with the 200tdi engine or the thread size for that bolt but a helicoil or time sert would be your best bet as you need something secure, as you probably know the cooling system is under pressure, good luck.

If you're carefully, drill out and re-tap. If this fails, drill through to next size longer bolt and nut up from bottom of thermostat housing. Replacement Defender 200Tdi thermostat housings are little pricey now but are available on eBay and new from Turner Engineering.

Thanks all, in the end, I found a slightly longer bolt that reached the remainder of the thread - the original bolts actually only go into the very top of the housing. I also retapped the housing which helped.

So far so good
