Thermostat fit?

[FONT=&quot]Hi Guys,[/FONT]

[FONT=&quot]Am completely rebuilding a 2.25 petrol engine and have got round to fitting a new stat. When i put the stat in to bypass casting and placed the top hose casting in top without o ring there is a gap between the two casting, is this normal

[FONT=&quot]I haven't even fitted the o ring the parts manuals show. I remember i had to destroy the old stat to get it out as it was stuck firmly in place. Also no o ring present.[/FONT]

[FONT=&quot]Does the stat outer casing collapse slightly to form a seal and this gap before bolting down is normal [/FONT]

[FONT=&quot]Any thoughts? I dont remember ever seeing this gap before on different engines.[/FONT]

Nah that doesn't sound right to me...I can't remember exactly but I seem to remember the stat on these has a large skirt and I had to thoroughly clean (scrape with a Stanley blade) out my housing as it looked like Mother Shipton's Cave...

Did you replace the thermostat housing gasket? I believe the part you need is upper thermostat gasket, part no. 527110

hi guys thanks for the response. didn't sound right to me either i'll post some pics later. I dont remember having any issues with my diesel stat. scraped out the groove.

do u guys put an o ring on top of stat. if so my problem just got bigger

When I replaced mine there was no O ring. Just the gasket between the the 2 stat housing parts.

2 1/4 engine uses gasket to seal housing and o ring to seal thermostat

found the problem as jamesmartin said there is an o ring on top of stat. mine had become one with the rust. I've dug it out, replaced with a new one and at first there is a gap between casting buts o ring compresses and gap closes nicely once bolts tightened.
