Freelander 1 The oil leak saga

While doing the weekly once over on the beast (2006 td4) I noticed the sump was covered in oil again

I don't think it was the pipes after all , I have found a "wet patch behind the belts . Any ideas lads ?

do you think it could be the crank oil seal ? the belts are being replaced next week as they are cracking the pully is coming off to have a look then

Pulley is hard to remove, need to lock engine or use an impact gun. If you remove the plastic cover in front of pulley and run engine you may see it if it is crank seal. Nothing else there that I can think of. Hp pump is above though!!

thanks andyfreelandy the fuel pump was rebuilt about a year ago so fingers crossed its not that , i am hoping its not that gasket in the picture i have never known on of them to faiI . I have had a good look round the fuel pump and around the top of the engine and can not see any leaks there , at first we thought it was the silicone hoses but now i am not so sure

Just a thought. Is the pump pulley nut access plug tight? It's located in the timing cover, on the mount side of the engine. It's a large Allen socket plug about 30mm in diameter. If it hasn't been tightened correctly, then it could leak.

Progress, when i pull the car off the drive fuel has started to drip from the front left hand side so after all that it looks as if it is not oil so i am assuming the hpf as an intermittent leak that is getting worse .Two questions then, other than the kit you can buy to rebuild the pump (which has been done) are there any other seals in the pump that could leak/could be replaced that would cause this and failing that can anyone recommend a good place to buy a reconditioned one from ? I have no idea how much a new one is or even if they still make them .As far as i no the rover 75 is the same engine i wonder if that would work out cheaper

Be careful with leaks - the undertray can carry fluids and deposit them nowhere near where the leak is - you need to eyeball the actual leak. Having said that - isn't the left hand side of the car where the fuel burning heater is? (if fitted)

Thanks GG i should have said the undertray has been off for a little while i tried to find the leak and when i say the left hand side that was with me looking at the windscreen if that makes sense . Also i have no fbh and i put my finger in the fluid it was clear ,it was dripping like water (at first i thought it was) and smelled of fuel , i am having the belts done in a few days i will be able to have a good look then

I thought it looked like the HPFP leaking. Diesel doesn't look the same as oil, when it's leaking down the front of the engine.

You can buy reconditioned or new HP pumps, but new ones are very expensive.

Mine has been leaking since September, but only the occasional drip. So I'm going to sort it in spring, when the weather improves.

Being as i have already had the thing rebuilt are there any other seals i could replace that might have gone ? and failing that could you recommend some were to buy a recondition one ? if it is the seals that have gone after having the pump rebuilt i am not going to try again , Best thing is i never saw any fuel coming from the seals

There aren't any seals that wouldn't have been changed, not in the kits I use anyway. My own HP pump continued to leak after I fitted a seal kit to it. I put this down to corrosion on the pump heads and body, which I didn't clean off thoroughly enough.
I got a second hand pump as a quick replacement, which is now leaking again. I'm going to rebuild the original pump again (properly this time). This should solve the problem for the remainder of the time I have the car.

Unfortunately mine is leaving a puddle every time i use it i think i will have a look on ebay , there are some on there for about £189 with a years warranty i do not fancy rebuilding it again . I am planning on keeping my td4 its only done 73,000 miles and still has the propshaft ect fitted so i think it is worth it
