The KiEAS of death!

Had a great time last night, first my ferry was 1 hour late docking, then half way up the A34 one of the straps holding a bed on the roof snapped and nearly dumped the bed in the middle of the road, then at 1am on the M4 the EAS went into spasm and dropped to the bump stops complete with flashing lights and associated sound effects. All in all, a great evening!

Anyway, I'm guessing the compressor is probably dead, having been over-worked due to the load I had in/on the car last night and trying to keep the rear (leaking) air spring inflated!

Anyone got a quick way I can check if the compressor is actally working. I can replace the air bags pretty easily, but not if the compressor is dead!

Take the compressor off,(8mm socket,12mm o/e spanner) then remove the cyl head - 4, 8mm headed bolts.Inside you will then see the piston with its teflon seal running in the alloy barrel.Gently take it apart and you will quickly see if the seal has failed.

cheers eight - you got any idea if it is possible to recondition these compressors rather than buy new. I'm not inclined to buy a second hand unit as you've never got any idea how hard it has worked.

I recently discovered that Airbag Man in Brisbane Australia sells brand new compressors to export customers for A$400 or US$300 for inexpensive worldwide shipping, They also supply a compressor service kit from the OEM manufacturer (Thomas Pumps) that includes new sleeve and piston/conrod assy, and sells for A$200.00 or US$150. (prices to Australian customers are higher due to local import duty and taxes.

Good news.... I checked out the compressor today. Connected it directly to the battery - naughty I know, but it proved that it worked!

So now I'm hoping that the EAS has tripped out because the compressor was just running constantly. Will take it to the local specialist tomorrow and ask him to diagnose it - hopefully just an EAS reset, then will fit 3 new airbags so I have new ones all round, and hope for the best!

Thanks to Steve (my local specialist) I've now got a nice working air suspension system again! He fitted the two rear bags (I didn't fancy doing those myself) reset the ECU and all's well. Just got to fit the one remaining front air bag now and then my system has a whole new set of air bags all round, and hopefully all the weird problems will go away now!
