Luckily he had a replacement, so I guess those other things I had planned to do to it this weekend has just shifted down the list!!!

Tapping noise still there after doing exhaust?
Well that was fun... previous owner had fitted a new middle silencer but left the old rear box on which was obviously knackered, but also reattached it with 3 different sized bolts that were rusted to hell. Had to cut them off and now fitted with 3 nice new bolts that are the same size! Right onto the next job and than a test drive to see if that has sorted the tapping

No, just got back from a good drive but the tapping still there unfortunately
Ollie (the guy @boguing recommended) had a quick listen yesterday when I was picking up the exhaust part and wasn’t a 100% what it was but seems to think something to do with gearbox area!!
Was thinking of taking it to somewhere like a Mr Clutch for them to give me a free (no obligation) diagnostics on the clutch... cheeky I know but at least then I’ll find out what it is and if its just going to be “dear you can’t buy that new handbag” expensive or “while you’re there mate just take the kidney” expensive!!

I struggle to see how that could be connected to the clutch. DMF I have no experience of but maybe @Brown and @Discodevon could have a listen, but to me it sounds more like a loose bit of steel joggling around, and for the life of me can't think of anything at the back of the engine that could do it.

Oh, should have said clutch thrust bearing failing in a weird way, but you say the pedal makes no difference.
No not really... and that would make sense as it seems to sound more frequent as the speed increase! haven’t had a passenger try and listen, but that’s a good idea.
Could it just be in need of a fluid top up... would that help? I don’t know if the previous owner would have had it done given the other bits I found to date and the guy I had do a so called full major service (trying my money back from the garage) on it didn’t even change the fuel filter so guess he didn’t do either!!

It does sound like something lose rattling about, jubilee clip on either of the prop shafts?
Never a bad thing to check the oil level, but I can't see that would be the noise source

It won't be fluids. Try the willing passenger first, then you'll need to just give everything a shake in the area they reckon it's coming from

Try the same test you did [ running up through the gears ] with the transfer box in neutral. That gearstick is shaking a lot.
