Freelander 1 Temperature sensors

Hi

I'm a new member and a Freelander for the last few days and have a couple of questions about sensors on a Freelander 1 -04.

I scanned it with a OBD reader I got an error message P0480 and some temperature values I don't understand. I left the car over night so expected all reading to be the same, (see photo cold engine).
A couple of questions:
  • Where is the sensor for air temp placed ?
  • I only have one sensor for water temperature, why are there two different values (coolant temp and ECM Coolant temp)? The values for oil, air and ECM coolant temp all seem to be 25 deg too high, have anyone seen similar values?
When I connect a potentiometer and lower the resistance the fans starts at 145 Ohm, 101 deg coolant temp and ECM temp at 126 deg and gauge in mid position so at least the fan seems working I just like to know the temperature reading is correct. If I have to order a new sensor is it then a MEK000030L?
I will try to measure PW to see what it actually sends to the relay.

It's in the inlet manifold, on one of the 4 tubes to the engine, but I can't remember which.

Maybe try a different OBD2 reader? It could be that the one you are using isn't displaying the correct information.

There is only 1 temperature sensor, so any multiple readings should be the same.

Try the Torque App, and see if that gives different data.

Thank you very much for your help.
You're right, the values are not correct, I inserted a thin thermocouple in the house going from engine to radiator and it is almost spot on to the lower value.
When I use generic EOBD I get correct values for coolant and air temperature, I will send an email to the manufacturer and ask.
I have an iPhone so can't use Torque, I will try to borrow another reader and see what reading I get from that one.

I will get a new sender and change that and thermostat when I change coolant later, is it MEK000030L?

One of the many reasons why I won't have a I Phone. I want my phone to do what I want, not what Apple decides I can do with it.

I agree, but as long as I don't use it as OBD reader it is user friendly.

I saw another thread that you dissected a fan controller, are they overly complicated? My cooling system seems to work but I get this P0480 error that I like to get rid of. They run on low speed when I have the AC and the PWM signal looks ok on oscilloscope so should be something inside the controller (I think).
 
P0480 seems to appear when all is working well. It does on my 1.8 K Kalahari. If you get to the bottom of it please let us know!!

Android,especially Samsung's tweaked Android isn't exactly unfriendly, quite the opposite in fact. It has been designed to provide the best user experience, and has access to millions of free Apps, which makes it the most versatile OS available. Android is total freedom from the corporate control that Apple insist on forcing on its users. ;)

It's just a module, with power control of the fans, in sync with the ECU's PWM signal. Although it only has the one PWM line, it does appear that the ECU can flag up faults with the fan control module, even though there's no data line.

I agree that Android gives more freedom to their users, for good and for bad.

P0480 seems to appear when all is working well. It does on my 1.8 K Kalahari. If you get to the bottom of it please let us know!!
In my case I have only seen the error when the car hasn't had the ignition on for a few minutes. This makes to suspect there is something with a capacitor in the controller. It could still be something with the cables but I doubt that.
I need my car at the moment but maybe someone has a faulty unit they are willing to sell cheap and I could try solve it.

Hi Chris, I know this posting is from a few years ago, but on the 30th of July 2020, you mentioned a potentiometer. I also have a 1.8 K series petro Freelander (2000) and want to connect a potentiometer. Which wire did you splice in to and what potentiometer did you buy? I want to connect a potentiometer to the twin wires that feed the coolant temperature sensor that supplies information to the ECU. I have one potentiometer that has 3 ports, but the COolant temp sensor for the ECU has only 2 wires. Do you simply splice that twin wires and simply connect one and the other to the potentiometer?
