Rob,
I had the same problem last week with my DSE too.
Easily solved by a new Thermostat
Thermostat: £18.00
'O' Ring: £1.00
Once done, works a treat, spot on, needle straight up at the 'o'clock' position.....
Didn't bother with the water temp test to see if it opens and closes, for less than twenty quid I couldn't be bothered.

its broke! - take it out and put 12volts across it - does it go FSD?
is it reading 12volts on one side of the gauge?
what happens if you earth the sensor wire at the sensor end?
what happens if you earth the non 12V side of the gauge?
is it reading 12volts on one side of the gauge?
what happens if you earth the sensor wire at the sensor end?

wonder how many of the kids on here know what FSD stands for
