Series 3 Temperature gauge reading hot

I’ll take a better one there at lunch, I was told that the unit with the wire attached closest to the bulkhead was the sender unit, I would have thought it would be closer to the thermostat.

Okay. Up to you, but I suspect the sender isn't matched to the gauge. And getting the right sender with the right thread for there might be a challenge. I've found a significant variation in the calibration of senders that were theoretically identical. So you might be forced to try a few from different sellers before you get the right one.
 
If I recall on mine the one closest to the thermostat is the oil temp gauge for the cold start lamp (not that it works)

First point of call is clean the connection, then do the tests on the gauge (earthing to block etc), then take it for a run to get it ‘hot’ and shove a £3 meat thermometer in the top.

For ease, you may choose to utilise a durite capillary gauge for peace of mind as it gives you the true temp!
