Temperature a bit high?

I ordered a sender from my local Land Rover supplier on Friday, this supplier is very good.
If the previous engine was a Defender and the sender and gauge was also a Defender, the sender that had been ordered will match the gauge.
I have told the parts shop the new information, engine serial number, part number and thread type of the sender that is currently fitted and they are going to investigate further, the sender we have ordered will arrive this morning and they will check the thread type, might be just a matter of buying the correct adaptor from Steve Parker and hoping this sender does match the gauge then...

Whilst the Land Rover supplier Dingocroft, was investigating, I called Engine Solutions who had fitted the recon. engine and updated them with the information, asking if they knew the origin of the engine.
When I mentioned that it was probably from a Range Rover, they stated that the 200dti was never fitter to a Range Rover and who ever said that doesn't know what they are talking about.
When I repeated this mentioning that I had seen information on the internet that showed a model of the Range Rover did have the 200dti engine fitted to it, he stated that the information on the internet must be wrong, he was adamant that the Range Rover never had a 200dti fitted.:D
He stated that if I order a sender by the Reg. of the vehicle it will be right, that is what they do (Mmmnn, so why is the sender they put in wrong?).

Dingocroft called back after I had finished my call with Engine Solutions and confirmed the engine is from a Range Rover Classic 1992- 1994! :bored:

They confirmed that the thread and thermostat housing physical characteristics are the same on the Defender and Range Rover engine, so the sender we ordered should work.

It will be delivered to me today and I might be able to fit it tonight and then I'll know for sure...

nice, what a nob jockey at that garage.

everyone can make a mistake. no point just saying everyone is wrong without checking your facts when faced with contrary evidence mr watson.

The supplied sender is the wrong thread, I have emailed Dingo Croft with an image and I'll take it from there...

They supplied a Defender sender which should be the same as the Range Rover one.

The one in the image on the left is what is fitted the one on the right supplied by Dingocroft.

ah gutted. you got a engineering place or decent garage near by?

thread gauge will tell you what they both are. well handy to have in your tool box too ;)

I'm off work from Wednesday and through next week, that might be the best time to sort this out. Dingocroft will have a thread gauge, they will call me soon and we'll work out a plan

rightio. out of interest what part number did they send?

right. you might end up ordering a couple of wrong bits.. but feck it.

from that pic of your sender i got https://partsdb.info/autopart/fae/31210

that says 5/8x18 thread. 5/8 is actually the thread for a fender 200tdi as well.

so go and order Temperature Sender Defender 200Tdi PRC8593 Island 4x4 - Specialists in Land Rover and Range Rover Parts and accessories for all models. UK and worldwide mail order. first.

stick it in (if it fits - it should!) and see if that fixes your gauge.

Trax, they sent the same one you suggested above^
Temperature Sender Defender 200Tdi PRC8593 Island 4x4 - Specialists in Land Rover and Range Rover Parts and accessories for all models. UK and worldwide mail order.
Part number on invoice PRC8593.

This is Dingocroft's reply:
The threads are definitely different, so this makes life very complicated, and therefore I think your options are as follows:

· Replace the thermostat housing with a Defender 200TDi unit and use the Defender sender unit supplied (about £200 plus VAT)
· Obtain an adaptor and use the Defender sender unit supplied
· Helicoil your current thermostat housing to modify the thread and use the Defender sender unit supplied
· Use your existing sender unit and install a resistor on your temperature gauge to reduce the reading to where it should be for the vehicle (You would have to experiment with impedance to obtain the correct result)
· Live with an incorrect reading and regularly check the engine temperature using your hand-held thermometer

I don't have the time to consider my options right now, must get on with my day job...

haha.

personally, i'd get onto that garage and get them to send you the old engines housing if they still have it.

failing that adapter to fit standard or rethread it.

On the phone to Steve Parkers, he is adamant that I need this:
www.steveparkers.com/product/spck224t2-90-110-conversion-fine-thread-temp-sender-with-200tdi/

I asked about a gauge that shows the temperature, he has found one, I would need an adapter for the sender and it is capillary rather than electric, he's going to call back with a price.
I'm going to order the sender he suggested for now and consider doing the gauge upgrade maybe later, let's hear the price...

so he thinks it's a standard disco fine thread then. yeah an adapter from coarse to fine would do it (if he's right)

means you can use stock in the future.

I've ordered the sender in the link, no adapter.

The Gauge he mentioned is £35, I've decided against it right now as I don't want the extra hassle, I'll consider gauge upgrade when I do any sort of dash upgrade further down the line.

Main thing right now is getting this into a reasonable useable condition...

The sender from Steve Parker should arrive tomorrow morning, watch this space...

Hmm .... I bought the senderkit from steve parker for the disco into defender conversion. Two senders - one fine pitch one course.

Left me with a gauge that still over-reads. Their response was - 'you must have a dodgy earth mate'. Interested to hear if it fixes it for you.

you checked the earth? it's very easy to test.

when i had an earth fault, the blowers being on rose the fuel and temp gauges :)

OK, been busy so haven't updated.

After work last night checked electrics in different ways, had already run a new cable in my lunch break earlier in the day.
Before giving up for the evening I decided to drain some coolant so I can try the senders with out coolant escaping, I had only tried then whist at work, nipping out and quickly removing the sender that isn't working.
I thought I should try both that I had been supplied with more time to ensure they definitely don't fit.
They don't.
The sender my Land Rover parts supplier had sent me has a thread which is close, I left that in there a while and it heated up a little. When I turned on the ignition a little heat was registered, the needle didn't swing over to the right, this suggests that sender is compatible with my gauge and the electrics are OK.
I kept the sender that does fit out over night and took it to the Land Rover supplier who could only confirm the thread is different to the one they had supplied.
I took the sender that does fit to a pipe supplier who measured the thread and provided me with a blanking plug.
I have put the blanking plug in the engine and have sent the sender with the correct thread to Simon Parkers who will then supply me with a gauge that shows the temperature in Celsius steps and a matching sender that will with fit or with an adaptor, it is a capillary action rather than electric...

Hopefully by the end of the week, early next week otherwise.

Meanwhile, on the hottest day this year I'm driving around with no temperature gauge to tell me how hot my new engine is, but I am measuring it periodically (after nearly every journey) with the infrared temperature gun.

So the saga continues.
I received the mechanical, capillary gauge today, but it isn't supplied with an adaptor. I'm surprised Simon Parkers didn't supply the adaptor, I've emailed them, so see what they can do on Monday.

The adaptor fitting is what I need.

Although the captive fitting does fit into the thermostat housing the end of the capillary tube is not secured and there is no seal.

This is how it is supplied...

Does look good in the dash though...
