P38A Temp sensor

You can undo them carefully with a pair of water pump pliers they should not be tight.
i know its a bit dodge artist but needs must some times.

I've ordered a 12mm key - it'll arrive tomorrow.

Pending that, though, Just wanted to check if theres anything else I could be doing/looking at/etc to diagnose what the problem is.

I would say 99% the stat is open all the time, thats why the heater wont get hot and the gauge barely moves. its just over cooling.

Aye.

Overcooling might be better than overheating though.. despite it resulting in being somewhat more thirsty haha

Yes you wouldnt want it the other way that can get very expensive and more heart ache then just a stat open.

So.. Finally got around to do this.
Looks like the old stat is definitely the issue, though haven't put the new one on yet trying to decide if I want to replace any hoses.

The old stat has failed internally - the legs that hold the pin true have snapped, with the spring then forcing the seal permanently open.

It's got an 'ole drilled in it anorl!
Mine was the same when i got the car, it was done to keep the temp down and mask the cracked block

When I bought my project car, somebody had done this bodge. Bolt certainly didn't just fall in there !! Replaced the thermostat, but interestingly the old one tested perfectly in my kettle against temp probe.

I think you have found the cool running issue, hopefully as mentioned there is no other issues.

To aide in bleeding/removing airlocks most likely. New one works perfectly though.

Possibly, but it's not required and buggers up the flow. And the engine won't get up to temp
