Hi all, what a great forum - always manage to solve my problems!..... the thing is I get quite scared everytime I read about peoples gearbox problems. I have a 2004 TD6 with 90,000 on the clock. At present I have no gearbox issues, but is there anything I should be doing to prevent problems and large bills in the future?
Ive read about torque converters exploding, swarf etc etc...... so should I have oil and filter changed? new torque converter maybe? - also what about the transfer box - does this need any maintainence?

Thanks in advance!

Oil and filter change for the gearbox is a must and should be done on a regular basis...depending on amount of mileage done or use, at least every two years or fourty thousand miles.

Get a good garage to do it and check for glitter or bits in the oil and on the sump pan magnets, this gives an indication of the state of the components, but wont stop failure of the box. How you drive the vehicle is also an important factor.

If you've got the spare money, you can get the box stripped, checked and refurbed.. search for RS2000CUSTOMs posts, they'll give you some good pointers on cost, etc.

Oil and filter change yearly or 24K miles. If you have the cash get the torque convertor replaced before it fails and fecks the box.

If that is the GM box it has a valve block made from some form of cheese that wears away i believe. :D:D:D
