td6 clunking judder as it tried to change gear

hello again I have just tried to drive my range rover td6 auto, I have had the car for a while with no major faults, I pulled away from a junction just now and as the range rover went to change up into a higher gear it started to clunk and vibrate really badly so I stopped dead of my own accord I then put it in reverse no problem no noise etc, put it back into drive pulled off fine again no noise on change up same again now sat waiting for rac to come save me

Torque converter failing. Usual problem if it's around 100,000 miles or so on the clock.

Yeah the internals of the boxes and converters are made in a factory straddling the French and Spanish border, from a mixture of soft cheese and onion skins.

I had a feeling oh well happy xmas lol, looks like its down to swinfeild cooper,is there any where else in Leicester any one would recommend

So instead of atf it should be olive oil and garlic pan fried

Is Leicestershire anywhere near Lancashire??? (anything north of the river is foreign territory for me sorry - suppose I could look at a map!)

K Motors in Preston/Leyland Lancs, does a good turnaround service I believe...

But yes, stop driving before your box is totalled...catch it early and all you'll need is a rebuild....keep driving and you'll feck it!

Christmas Eve too - perfect sod's law RR timing.

I no its just my luck. Someone has offered me a bmw x5 3 litre diesel would the torque converter and gearbox fit my range rover? Thanks for your help

In theory yes, but whether that's the case in reality I don't know. I do know the transfer boxes are different so bolt-on compatibility is not guaranteed!

The X5's dont have a low box as they are single ratio....

I have no clue if the main box is a straight fitment, i would doubt it....

Search the net for posts by a chap called RRPhil (he is better known as Bemble on here) the guy is a guru and legend....search the net as he posts on many firums and no doubt he has tackled this Q before!

Thought it was too good to be true. I will just bite the bullet and take it to be done lol

And astonishingly - despite being a much simpler transfer box, X5 TBs are much, much more likely to fail - bizarre! I reckon it's because RR owners - expecting the worst - are more likely to keep up with fluid changes etc. BMW owners just stick the key in expecting it to work, so the slow leak of the transfer box goes unnoticed - BANG! :doh:

Don't take it anywhere (particularly not a dealer!) take heed of recommendations on here.

The BMW boxes are sealed for "Life":doh: just like the RR before they figured maybe not

Diff or front prop??? I had the RECALL done on the prop just before Christmas.
